FIU Women’s Basketball has strengthened its backcourt with two international guards – a scoring guard from Australia and a defensive playmaker from the Bahamas.
The Panthers are adding depth and talent to their 2025-26 roster. Riley Burd is a standout scorer from Midland College, and Denika Lightbourne is a defensive-minded sophomore transfer from Dayton.
The new backcourt duo brings experience, versatility, and international pop to a Panthers team looking to make a jump in Conference USA.
Riley Burd – Australian Transfer
Riley Burd joins FIU from Midland College, where she made a name for herself as a reliable scorer. Originally from Perth, Australia, the junior guard showed consistency across two seasons in the WJCAC. She earned Honorable Mention Region 5 honors in 2025.
Burd’s sophomore year featured a season-high 22-point game and eight double-digit scoring performances. Known for her three-point shooting and steady playmaking, she adds offensive depth to the roster.
Before college, Burd built an impressive résumé in Australia. She was a WABL (Western Australian Basketball League) scoring leader, multiple-time MVP, and a key player in several state and club championships. Her international experience and high basketball IQ make her a promising addition to FIU’s 2025-26 rotation.
Denika Lightbourne – Bahamas Native
Transferring from Dayton, Denika Lightbourne brings speed, versatility, and experience to the Miami court. The 5’9″ guard appeared in 15 games during her sophomore season. She flashed her potential in key matchups, including a season-high 17-minute performance against Rhode Island.
Lightbourne had a bigger role as a freshman, starting 12 games and contributing on both ends of the floor. Her resume includes playing for the Bahamas Women’s National Team. She also had an impressive high school career at Tallulah Falls in Georgia. There, she earned multiple All-State honors and broke school records in assists, steals, and blocks.
Now at FIU, Lightbourne has a chance to take on a more prominent role and bring toughness to the Panthers’ outside defense.
FIU Backcourt Outlook for 2025-26
The additions of Burd and Lightbourne give head coach Jesyka Burks-Wiley new options in the backcourt. Burd offers shooting and playmaking, while Lightbourne brings athleticism, energy, and a defensive edge.
With both guards entering their junior year, FIU women’s basketball gains not just talent—but players with upside and room to grow in the program.
As the Panthers prepare for a new season, these two transfers could play key roles in shaping the identity of this year’s team.
