The FIU Women’s Soccer program is doubling down on strengthening its backline, with two standout defenders joining the squad – Mona Gellert and Natalia Ballinas. Both players enter the Panthers on the heels of a dramatic 2024 season capped by FIU’s first-ever conference championship.

Mona Gellert – European Pedigree Heading To Florida

Flying from Freiburg, Germany, Gellert brings a unique competitive experience to the Panthers. A junior defender, she developed at Rotteck Gymnasium before playing with SC Freiburg. Mona helped the club achieve a couple of top-three finishes—third place in the U17 Bundesliga and second place in both the U17 and 2. Bundesliga. Finally reaching championship success in the Regionalliga Süd/Südwest.

Gellert arrives at FIU ready to use her international experience and European defensive insight to help anchor a backline aiming for a repeat.

Natalia Ballinas – Homegrown Talent Here To Stay

Natalia Ballinas is keeping her talents in Florida as she joins the Panthers for her sophomore season. She was able to total 81 minutes with UCF and registered her first collegiate start vs Florida. By the end of that season, the Knights officially designated Natalia as a redshirt player. Maintaining her sophomore eligibility, she joins the Panthers as a redshirt Sophomore.

A two‑year letter‑winner at Cypress Bay High, she earned state‑level honors including Sun‑Sentinel Second Team and Broward All‑County recognition. Adding to her list of accolades, she also had the opportunity to play for the U17 women’s Mexican National team. Having played at the collegiate (UCF) and national level (Mexican National U17), Ballinas offers a mix of size, athleticism, and experience to FIU. Her familiarity with Florida and its soccer culture makes her a perfect fit.

Loading Up For The 2025 Season

As the Panthers gear up for 2025, their defense will feature a unique mix of seasoned returning players, international pedigree, and national experience. Their first test begins next month with their first game of the season at home against Florida State. With plenty of talent and head coach Matt Dunn leading the helm, FIU is ready to defend its CUSA title.
