Miami, Florida – The Hurricanes took care of the South Florida Bulls, outclassing USF on both sides of the ball to win 49-12, improving their record to 3-0. Miami got off to a fast start, jumping to a 14-0 lead before inclement weather delayed the contest for nearly two hours (1 hour 42 minutes). Carson Beck connected twice with freshman Joshua Moore, recording the wide receiver’s first two career touchdowns. After a pair of aerial scores in the first quarter, UM switched gears, attacking on the ground, producing two rushing TDs from Beck and Mark Fletcher Jr., who finished the night with 120 yards.

Despite being up 28-6 at the half, the Canes became sloppy, committing seven penalties costing them 59 yards. The defense continued to keep the Bulls out of the endzone, allowing Fletcher’s knockout blow late in the third, a 13-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left in the period. South Florida eventually scored a touchdown thanks to a 12-yard reception to Christian Neptune during the fourth quarter, but it was already too late.

Beck was subbed out late for backup Emory Williams, completing 23 of 28 passes for 340 yards, three touchdowns (plus a rushing TD), and two interceptions. Moore caught all three of his passes for 61 yards on top of his two touchdowns. Keelan Marion is the latest wide receiver to step onto the stage, tallying six receptions for 81 yards. Malachi Toney had a quieter game, nabbing six catches for 66 yards. The defense was consistent throughout the matchup, logging seven pass deflections, two sacks, and two turnovers (INT and a fumble). Miami will now prepare for the visiting Florida Gators.

Storming the Bulls

Beck got to work on the opening drive, capping off the 75-yard possession with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Moore. The two would connect again on the following series via a 39-yard TD, giving the Canes an early advantage. The defense began limiting Byrum Brown, starting with a timely pass deflection. Brown went deep on 3rd and 7 from USF’s 39-yard line, intending to find Chas Nimrod, but OJ Frederique stuck to him, breaking up the play. South Florida got on the board with a 45-yard field goal from Nico Gramatica.

Once the rain delay ended, the Bulls resumed their drive as Brown went long again,  this time succeeding with the 53-yard gain to Nimrod. USF got into the red zone but had to settle for the 28-yard field goal. UM responded with three plays covering 75 yards that culminated in a 38-yard rushing TD, making it 21-6. The defense continued to contain the Bulls as Bryce Fitzgerald came up with the interception late in the second quarter. Miami converted with Beck’s 2-yard rushing score. South Florida collected its own pick; however, it failed to put up points before halftime.

Beck was picked off again during the third quarter. James Chenault intercepted the pass intended for Malachi Toney. The defense held the line, coming up with a turnover of their own. Brown scrambled up the middle, gaining six yards before Jakobe Thomas stripped him of the ball as Chase Smith recorded the fumble recovery. USF threatened late in the period, going for it on 4th and 3 at Miami’s 9. Rueben Bain Jr and Smith stopped Brown cold, forcing the turnover on downs. Fletcher finished off South Florida late in the third for the final nail in the coffin. The U padded the lead with CharMar Brown and Girard Pringle Jr., scoring.

How it went

This was a B+ effort. The offense was sloppy in the second half, while the defense stifled South Florida all game. A good example was when Miami came up with the big sack on 3rd and 8 midway through the second. Armondo Blount and Akheem Mesidor brought down Brown, ending their momentum. What bothered me the most was the overall penalties and the couple of explosive plays South Florida manufactured. UM didn’t land the final blow until late in the third, allowing the Bulls to linger. Regardless, it was good complementary football.

I predicted 37-13, so I wasn’t too far off. Containing Brown and making Keshaun Singleton irrelevant was key to the victory. Unfortunately, CJ Daniels didn’t score, and we saw nothing from JoJo Trader and Jordan Lyle. With the emergence of Joshua Moore, Joshisa Trader better get a move on because the WR Corps is forming and playing time might become an issue if it isn’t already. Moore is 6’4 and one of the fastest wideouts, showing his ability versus USF. The clock is ticking. Onward to Florida!
