On the road in a tough environment, FIU Men’s Soccer took care of business and secured a shutout victory over the Memphis Tigers to open up conference play in the American.

The last time the Panthers were in Memphis, they fell to Charlotte in the AAC Title Game in heartbreaking fashion. Tonight, they made sure to lock down the Tigers and not look back.

This is their first road win of the season as they extend their winning streak over Memphis to six matches. Believe it or not, this is FIU’s first shutout since November 2024, when they belted Florida Atlantic.

The Panthers did their damage early in the 19th minute, thanks in part to David Boccuzzo. He capitalized on a deep pass from Joao Domingues on the left corner of the field, beating the Memphis keeper. With a 1-0 lead, the game turned into a defensive onslaught.

When holding the lead, FIU’s defenders got to work, holding that lead the rest of the way. They limited the Tigers to only seven shots in the second half. Even with limited opportunities, they didn’t allow any shots ON GOAL, denying any real chances for an equalizer.

Nigel Van Haveren still put in work, recording two saves. This is his fourth shutout of his career in one of the best all-around defensive performances of the season for FIU. On offense, Alejandro Nasato led their attack with three shots, with two on goal.

FIU will head back to Leyva Family Field for a two-game homestand. They start against FGCU on Thursday, September 18th, at 7pm on Hispanic Heritage Night.
