Miami, Florida – With Championship Weekend underway, the Miami Hurricanes and Indiana Hoosiers appeared for Media Day at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Each team was available for an hour with a thirty-minute break in between, as players and coaches fielded a variety of questions from various news outlets. Beneath the festive atmosphere sat a sharp, competitive undertone. The student-athletes reflected on the moment and what it meant to them, while the coaches offered praise to their players and reviewed their team’s long journey.

One of the major themes at Media Day was the local connections that undoubtedly benefit the community. At its heart, it’s two hometown Cuban-Americans that fate placed on opposing teams, intertwined by being alumni at Christopher Columbus High School. For one, a decision to ditch the Ivy League to attend the University of California, Berkeley (Cal) led them down the path of both an undefeated season and winning the Heisman Trophy. Meanwhile, a former Canes player who won two national titles is forging a new chapter at Coral Gables as a head coach.
Let’s run through some of the takeaways.
Hurricanes maintain focus

We’ve heard it all year: Going 1-0 every week. Coach Mario Cristobal mentioned that it’s been a relentless season-long process, stressing the importance of staying focused and shutting out the noise. The team’s identity is rooted in the resilience they’ve shown through adversity. They carried themselves with a strong finish to the regular season in the aftermath of their defeats and took full advantage of the opportunity given to them as the last at-large bid for the CFP. Even when there was doubt about whether they belonged in the postseason, the Cardiac Canes kept grinding. The players remember that the job is not finished.
Christopher Columbus Bowl
Mendoza talks about being a UM fan and he knows how much this means to Miami.#GoCanes || #ItsAllAboutTheU || #CFBPlayoff || #Neverdaunted pic.twitter.com/gPhQH219Th

You can say this is the unofficial name of the title game. Others call it the Cuban Bowl. Fernando Mendoza had nothing but love for his roots, stating that this was a showcase for the entire high school. The part that got me was when he mentioned that they were all cut from the same cloth of grit, hardwork and brotherhood. Indiana’s star quarterback (and likely the #1 overall NFL Draft pick) was all smiles, really soaking it in, talking about what it means to him, his school, the community, and even to UM itself. Once upon a time, he was an avid Hurricanes fan. Underneath all that, however, you can tell he was locked in. Mendoza knows what’s at stake. Despite the ties to Columbus, they will step onto that football field not as friends, but as adversaries.
Legacy of The U
Wesley Bissainthe's UM Mt. Rushmore 🤣, I even slipped in a question at the end regarding the team’s mental preparation for the big game.#GoCanes || #ItsAllAboutTheU || #CFBPlayoff pic.twitter.com/akID93chQZ

The Mt. Rushmore question came up for Malachi Toney, Wesley Bissainthe, and Rueben Bain Jr. This is another major theme at Media Day: Legacy. Bissainthe stated that guys like Michael Irving and Ray Lewis spoke to the team, talking about leadership. Throughout the season and playoffs, these Miami legends have been a presence for the program. They serve as a reminder of the glory days. However, when you bring up the phrase “The U is Back” to coach Cristobal, he replies with “Back to what?” Akheem Mesidor hit the nail on the head. Mesidor said that while it was awesome to have these guys in their corner, at the end of the day, they aren’t the ones making the play. With the program’s heritage strongly felt, you gotta remember this is also potentially Cristobal’s legacy game right here.
