Miami, Florida – This is it, the College Football Playoff National Championship between the 10th-seeded Miami Hurricanes and the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. In one corner, you have a two-loss team that barely entered the postseason, beating three outstanding football squads, including two SEC programs and the defending champion, earning them the right to play in front of a home crowd for the championship. In the other corner, you have a school known for its basketball program that went undefeated, led by a hometown Heisman winner who attended Christopher Columbus High School.
What Curt Cignetti achieved is nothing short of spectacular. Recording their first-ever 12-0 regular season record, Indiana usurped the previous number one, Ohio State, defeating them in the Big Ten Championship. The Hoosiers were the only first-round bye team to win its quarter-final game. From there, they steamrolled Alabama and Oregon. UM is all that stands between them and their first-ever Natty. As fate would have it, this is a homecoming for Fernando Mendoza. Indiana’s star quarterback could have been a Hurricane. After spending three seasons at Cal, Mendoza hit the transfer portal with Georgia and Miami trying to recruit him.

Despite coach Mario Cristobal’s efforts, he chose the Hoosiers in December 2024. Mendoza was drawn by the opportunity to play with his brother. He also saw coach Cignetti as the best fit for his development. The Canes then went with Carson Beck. Born of Cuban descent, his father also played high school football alongside Cristobal at Columbus. Fernando Sr. went on to become a medical director at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. His mother lives with MS and is a big inspiration to him. Projected to be the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick, Fernando initially committed to Yale before flipping to California. The series of decisions has come full circle.

He is the last hurdle to Miami’s sixth national title. Totaling 3,349 passing yards with 47 combined touchdowns and six interceptions, Fernando Mendoza became just the third Heisman Trophy winner of Latino or Hispanic descent. He completed 17 of 20 passes for 177 yards and five TDs in the 56-22 domination of the Oregon Ducks. Averaging 461 yards per game, the offense is considered one of the very best in the country. Led by Mendoza, the Hoosiers are averaging 42.6 points per game, becoming the ultimate test for the Cardiac Canes. Gifted with size, football IQ, and accuracy, this pocket passer knows how to pick apart opposing defenses.
Omar Cooper Jr/Elijah Sarratt
Indiana WR Elijah Sarratt (6-2, 213) will play in the NFL 7-10 years.
♦️Chain mover- 80%+ of catches are 1st down
♦️65% contested catch win
♦️Career: 228 catches, 3535 yards (15.8 YPC), 41 TDAll business.

Indiana has a great dynamic duo among the wide receivers. Omar Cooper leads the team with 64 receptions for 866 yards and 13 touchdowns. Mendoza spread the ball around pretty evenly against the Ducks as Cooper registered three catches and a TD. A versatile wideout, he has excellent hands and run-after-catch abilities. Elijah Sarratt is right behind him, totaling 62 receptions for 802 yards and 15 scores. Sarratt had himself a day collecting seven catches for 75 yards and a pair of TDs, burning the Ducks. Besides the hands, Sarratt is effective at running routes and brings physicality for contested catches.
Rolijah Hardy

It’s not just the offense that’s impressive. Indiana’s defense allows an average of 11.1 points per game and 260.9 yards per game, ranking second only to the Hurricanes in sacks with 45. Rolijah Hardy is a standout linebacker who leads the team in tackles (99) and sacks (8), complemented by four pass deflections. Earning All-Big Ten recognition, Hardy is known for generating pressure. The O-line will need to be on its A-game.
D’Angelo Ponds

Seen as one of the best cornerbacks in the country, D’Angelo Ponds kicked off the Hoosier semi-final dominance via a 25-yard pick-six. Ponds is a huge presence for Indiana’s secondary, recording seven pass breakups. Similar to Mendoza, Ponds is also a Miami native who spent a year with James Madison. The All-American is a playmaker known for his elite speed and is a potential first-round NFL draft pick.

He’s been good through three postseason games, and he’s poised to see it through. Carson Beck threw his first interception of the CFP, but overcame it with a 268-yard and two-touchdown performance. This will be Beck’s third appearance at a title game, although his first as a starting quarterback. Limiting mistakes and making key throws while being mobile when needed will be the key to his success.

Say hello to the FWAA Freshman of the Year! Malachi Toney recently won the honor after recording the most receptions by a freshman in ACC history. Adding to his impressive year, Toney also tallied the most receiving yards by a freshman at Miami. Catching five passes for 81 yards and a TD, Toney bounced back from a quiet game against Ohio State. Curiously, the rookie has caught five passes in all three playoff games, with the Ole Miss receptions by far the most impactful.

This defense has been on lockdown mode all season, and there’s little to think it will change when UM plays Indiana. Ever since the Hoosiers throttled the Oregon Ducks, folks say they’re going to steamroll Miami. They clearly never met Rueben Bain Jr. or seen how he and the defense play. Brimming with elite athleticism, strength, and speed, Bain’s mere presence alters the calculus on the gridiron. Exceling at both pass-rushing and run-stopping, he will give it 200% on his final game as a Cane in front of a home crowd.
Mark Fletcher Jr.

Miami’s workhorse has crossed the centennial mark in all three postseason games, racking up 412 total yards in that span. UM’s run game is a significant reason why they’ve made it to the final, utilizing a balanced approach that ate up yardage and clock. I don’t see Coach Cristobal straying from this winning formula unless the game is slipping away frighteningly. Despite Indiana’s stingy defense, Fletcher should pass 100 yards one last time courtesy of that vaunted offensive line. The man showed how grateful he was to have made it this far, and his humility is inspiring to all who play the game.
Prediction
I said it then, I will say it now. If Miami defeated Ohio State, it could beat anyone. UM did, and the confidence has not waned. The game will be hard, and fans should prepare to see their blood pressure and heart rates go sky-high. Remember, a key player on defense will not be present, at least not right away. Xavier Lucas will miss the first half of the National Championship game due to a targeting penalty in the CFP Semifinal. Regardless, the Cardiac Canes will capture the title in a tremendous upset, 30-24. The moment everyone has been waiting for has finally come. The U can win, will they?
