Miami, Florida – Running back Mark Fletcher Jr rushed for three touchdowns Saturday night, setting a new career high in Miami’s 42-7 win over Stanford. It was also Fletcher’s sixth multi-TD game of his career. Fletcher racked up 106 yards by the end of the evening. The ninth-ranked Hurricanes looked to bounce back from last weekend’s loss to Louisville and did so despite an anaemic start that saw the contest tied 7-7 at halftime.

Carson Beck completed 21 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a lone touchdown that came during the second quarter, avoiding interceptions. Malachi Toney was the top receiver, catching five of six passes for 52 yards. The Hurricanes produced 404 total yards while holding Stanford to 144, including 55 yards on the ground and producing two takeaways. UM saw improvement in the penalties department, committing five. The Canes dominated time of possession, going 8-for-15 on third down, 3-for-5 on fourth down, and a perfect 6-for-6 in the red zone. Improving to 6-1 (2-1, ACC), the Hurricanes will now travel to Dallas to face SMU.

Chopping down the tree

Miami’s opening drive stalled at Stanford’s 25-yard line as Carter Davis missed the 43-yard field goal attempt. Stanford responded with a 12-play scoring drive culminating in Ben Gulbranson finding Caden High for the 9-yard touchdown. This proved to be their high point. The U’s offensive woes rolled into the second quarter when CJ Daniels dropped a pass, resulting in a turnover on downs. Daniels eventually redeemed himself as UM tied it up after the two-minute warning via a five-yard catch from Beck.

The Cardiac Canes took the lead midway through the third quarter. Toney gave the team better field position with a 31-yard punt return. Beck followed up with a pass through the middle to Tony Johnson, moving the chains 22 yards deep inside Cardinal territory. Fletcher capped off the series with a one-yard TD run. The defense, meanwhile, kept doing its thing, picking off Gulbranson twice in a row late in the period. Wesley Bissainthe was there like a bear when Gulbranson threw it under pressure. Xavier Lucas nabbed the other INT. The Hurricanes cashed in on both, courtesy of Fletcher, setting his career high.

Up 28-7, Jordan Lyle’s 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was the final nail in Stanford’s coffin. Girard Pringle Jr. also saw action, scoring in the final seconds of regulation.

Impressions

It was a tale of two halves. In the first, the defense quickly adjusted after Stanford’s opening series, while the offense sputtered. Fortunately, the performance improved dramatically with the Hurricanes forcing turnovers and scoring 14 points on those crucial stops. Toney returned another punt return for 42 yards, giving Beck and company a boost as well. Those plays caused a momentum shift, allowing Miami to pull away. Fletcher may have been great, but I am not convinced the offense has turned a corner. SMU will be the real litmus test.
