Miami, FL – FIU Women’s Soccer and Missouri State battled to a 1-1 draw finale this Sunday afternoon in the pouring rain. Facing all odds and losing their starting goalkeeper, the Panthers showed their determination to rally back against the Bears. The first matchup in history between the schools would go down to the wire, ending in a grueling tie.
Bears Strike First
The opening minutes saw both sides settle into a defensive rhythm, with FIU’s back line holding firm early, keeping the Bears in check. The Panthers defended with discipline, clearing balls and limiting clean looks at goal through the first stretch of play.
However, Missouri State found the breakthrough in the 29th minute, capitalizing on one of their early opportunities to take a 1-0 lead. FIU responded well, increasing their intensity and generating a few chances of their own. In the 35th minute, FIU’s Chinatsu Kaio nearly brought the game level when her shot hit the post.
Just as FIU looked to regain control, their momentum took a major hit when goalkeeper Valery Restrepo was given a red card seconds before halftime. The Panthers brought in #27 Odaliana Gomez to take over in goal for the remainder of the match. At halftime, Missouri State led 1-0.

The turning point came with 26 minutes left. Montelene Dymond rose above the defense and headed in the equalizer to make it 1-1. Notching her 8th goal on the year, a team high this season. The goal energized FIU and shifted the momentum, as the closing minutes were going to be their toughest yet.
The remainder of the match saw both teams battling for control in the rainy weather. Missouri State continued to test the new goalkeeper, hoping to push ahead. The Panthers’ defense stood tall, keeping the Bears at a distance as time expired.
When the final whistle blew, neither team could find a game-winner. FIU walked away with a well-earned tie that showed their toughness and ability to adapt under pressure. Although Missouri State held the edge in shots (14–9), FIU’s defensive structure kept them from pulling ahead.
Heading Into Tournament Play
With the regular season now complete, FIU turns its focus to the Conference USA Tournament. Set for November 2nd, the Panthers will face MTSU, a rematch of last year’s first round matchup. A game that ended in a 2-0 victory for the Panthers, who this time will be the 5th seed.
We did see a preview of this matchup earlier this season. MTSU would win 2-1 on their pitch after scoring two straight in the final minutes. Scoring the winning goal in the 89th minute, MTSU broke the tie to win.
The draw against Missouri State not only demonstrated FIU’s ability to respond to adversity but also highlighted the team’s competitive spirit — something they’ll rely on as they look to make a deep run in the conference tournament.
