Inter Miami Tidbits: Week of Gloom But It's Not All Doom For Inter Miami

– The Herons lived through the most difficult and gloomy week in the history of the young club. Jorge Messi, Lionel’s father, passed away on Saturday, August 8, after battling a serious illness for months. That same night, Inter Miami lost 2-1 to Mexican side Monterrey, all but eliminating the Herons from Leagues Cup 2026. On Wednesday night, Miami suffered another defeat, falling 3-2 to León and officially sealing its elimination from the international tournament. Then, on Saturday, August 15, Miami was routed 4-1 on the road by Supporters’ Shield leaders Nashville SC.

Nashville Nightmare

The Coyotes’ high press gave Inter Miami nightmares, especially Facundo Mura, who had a difficult night against Elias Asaad. Asaad delivered a sensational cross into the box in front of a passive Mura, setting up Andy Najar’s opening goal.

Lionel Messi missed a penalty kick that would have tied the game, but moments later, he assisted Telasco Segovia’s goal to level the match at 1-1.

The rest of the night went downhill for Miami as the “Boys in Gold” asserted their dominance with a barrage of goals, blowing the game wide open. Hany Mukhtar gave Nashville SC the lead with a precise left-footed strike into the corner of Miami’s net.

Miami’s Not Doomed

The gloom of the worst week in Miami’s short history does not mean the Herons’ season is doomed. There is still time and hope to turn things around. Nineteen of 34 games have been played, and despite a horrible string of injuries and disappointing results, Miami still has a chance to win trophies in 2026.

Tadeo Allende, Mateo Silvetti, Germán Berterame, Gonzalo Luján, Maxi Falcón, Santi Morales, Micael, Sergio Reguilón, and David Ayala have all missed significant time with injuries this season.

It is possible to recover all or most of those injured players, with enough games remaining for them to regain their rhythm and give the Herons a full roster heading into the playoffs. Inter Miami has fought through every obstacle the season has presented and still remains near the top of the standings. Although last week was the worst stretch the team has ever experienced, there is still hope that the season is not doomed. A team with Lionel Messi on the pitch is never counted out.
