FIU Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener Against #4 FSU

MIAMI, FL – Fans filled the seats at the Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium for the WSOC home opener. Unfortunately, the FIU Women’s Soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to #4 FSU.

Defense was the name of the game for the Panthers throughout the first half. They held the Seminoles scoreless on seven shots, with four on goal. Valery Restrepo was a key reason the Noles couldn’t find the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes. The senior finished the match with six saves on 12 shots.

FIU put up four shots in the first half but didn’t maintain ball possession for most of it. Instead, they spent most of it defending the pitch.

That trend continued into the second half, and it ultimately didn’t work in their favor. FSU struck first at the 55:32 mark when Wrianna Hudson scored on the top left of the goal off her right foot. Anaiyah Robinson tallied the assist.

Hardly a minute later, in the 57th minute, the Seminoles once again attacked FIU’s defense, resulting in a goal from Nyanya Touray. The FIU offense slightly improved in the second half, taking six shots, with three being on goal. However, it wasn’t enough as they were shut out by Fernanda Mayrink.

Midfielder Maya Maxwell took three shots in the game, one of them being on goal, and forward Mariana Barreto also had three shots.

FSU was awarded three corner kicks in the game while FIU didn’t have any. The Seminoles took just 13 fouls compared to 17 for the Panthers.

The Panthers played well on defense the first half against a top-ranked opponent.

Once the Seminoles scored their goals though, they failed to get consistent shots on goals.

This is the second consecutive season in which the Panthers lost 2-0 to Florida State. They started their 2025 campaign in Tallahassee against a then #3-ranked Noles squad.

FIU will face another test against a ranked opponent. They will head out on the road to face #3 Duke in Durham on August 20 at 6 pm.
