Griffin Conine homers twice as Marlins crush Angels

Miami, Florida – Griffin Conine raised his home run total to 12 as the Miami Marlins overpowered the Los Angeles Angels 12-3 to improve their record to 60-59. Down 1-0 early, the Fish had an eventful first inning, scoring on a wild pitch, a throwing error, and an RBI single. Miami blew the game open with six runs in the fifth, effectively knocking out the Angels. Conine wrapped up the day going 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.

Despite the victory on Billy the Marlin’s birthday, there’s concern with Kyle Stowers (2-for-4, one run, two RBIs). The first baseman exited today’s game during the fifth due to left hamstring discomfort and will undergo further evaluation. Up 8-2, Stowers hit a two-run single before making his way back to the bag, looking visibly uncomfortable. If he misses an extended amount of time, Leo Jiménez and Agustín Ramírez will likely take over.

Ryan Gusto was on the mound for the Marlins, tossing four innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, walking one and fanning four. The bullpen stepped in with the combined efforts of Michael Petersen, Tyler Zuber, Calvin Faucher, and Victor Vodnik, who handcuffed the opposing offense. Faucher ran into trouble in the seventh, giving up back-to-back singles to start the frame. Although he walked Nolan Schanuel to load the bases, he retired the next two hitters to escape the jam.

The bats stay awake

Zach Neto scored the first run of the contest via a shallow bloop to center field that Jakob Marsee couldn’t reach, resulting in a close call at the plate. The Marlins challenged the RBI single, but Schanuel beat the tag. Trailing 1-0 at the bottom of the first, the Fighting Fish immediately responded. Leadoff hitter Kyle Stowers laced a triple, ultimately scoring on the wild pitch. Otto Lopez chimed in, recording a base hit on a soft ground ball to third baseman Denzer Guzman. Xavier Edwards raced to third on the play and then cashed in on first baseman Schanuel’s throwing error, making it 2-1. Keeping up the attack, Owen Caissie singled on a line drive to left, plating Lopez to cap off the three-run inning.

The Angels did not go away quietly, getting one back in the second when Jose Siri hammered his seventh home run of the year to center. Miami extended their lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Javier Sanoja manufactured an RBI single. The home team exploded for six runs the following frame. Conine started the hit parade, hammering a no-doubter. The two-run blast was his 11th home run of the 2026 season. After inducing an RBI hit in the fourth, Sanoja came back for more with a bases-loaded, two-run single. Sanoja went 2-for-4, including a run and three RBIs. Stowers did the same, putting the home team in firm control, 10-2. The Fighting Fish tacked on two more that included Griffin’s second dinger. The offense churned out 14 hits on Sunday, outscoring the Angels 22-7 over the weekend. Marsee went 2-for-5 with a run while Caissie completed the game 2-for-4, scoring twice and adding a run.

Impressions

Oh, things are about to get pretty interesting at first base. We might see even Conine play some there. I wish we still had Liam Hicks. If the worst-case scenario comes to pass, the Marlins will lose one of their best hitters at the back end of the season. For those experiencing deja vu, Stowers suffered a left oblique strain on August 17, 2025, ending his year. Let’s hope history does not repeat itself.
