Miami Marlins honor ’97 champions, mash 3 HRs versus Brewers

Miami, Florida – After the Miami Marlins paid homage to the 1997 World Series Champions they strung together two huge innings overpowering the Brewers 9-3. Trevor Rogers put up a great performance on the mound supported by three home runs in the fourth to record his second win of the year.

Lasting a little over five innings, the lefty held a very good Brew Crew to a single run scattering five hits and fanning eight. The offense was off to a very slow start until it erupted securing the lead for the rest of the night.

Flashing the lumber

Willy Adames gave Milwaukee the early 1-0 advantage. The shortstop clobbered the ball taking Rogers deep to left field for his ninth homer of the year. It was their zenith.

Miami’s bats woke up in a big way at the bottom of the fourth crushing a trio of long balls. Jesús Aguilar went yard for the second consecutive night marking number five of the year. This was immediately followed up by Jorge Soler slamming his sixth of the season. With a 2-1 lead Brian Anderson turned on the power smashing another to left field to double up on the Brewers 4-1.

BA was not finished with Milwaukee notching another run in the sixth. With two runners on, Andy hit a hard one to Luis Urias. The second baseman couldn’t field it cleanly committing an error. Avisaíl García scored on the play, making it 5-1. Miguel Rojas kept it rolling finding a hole on the left side for the two-run double. Miami ended up scoring a quartet of runs in the sixth to ice it.

Honoring 1997

What a year. Although I was merely a 10-year-old boy, the memories of the Florida Marlins’ postseason run to their first World Series title are still very fresh. Not only did they sweep the San Francisco Giants but also defeated the 101 win Atlanta Braves. As a kid, I absolutely hated the Braves. Everything about them. The players. The jersey. That obnoxious chop. Beating them in the playoffs was deliciously sweet. The fact that Atlanta had the best record in baseball at the end of the season made it all the better.

I didn’t go to a single postseason game (did so in 2003), however, I watched most of it on television. Funny enough, I fell asleep in the sixth inning of Game 7. I woke up in the ninth with the team losing. We were two outs away from defeat when Craig Counsell hit a sac fly scoring Moisés Alou and sending it to extras. My nap kept me awake long enough to see Édgar Rentería walk it off scoring Counsell. The entire house was screaming and cheering. After celebrating we rode out in the family car driving everywhere honking the horn all over Miami.

When I think of the ’97 Marlins my favorite guy has to be Gary Sheffield followed closely by Liván Hernández and Kevin Brown. Seeing the heroes of that year was truly a treat for me today.
