Miami, Florida –Β The Miami Hurricanes were unable to overcome the power hitting of the Golden Bears and, more importantly, a disastrous injury on the mound. Trailing 4-1 early in the third, Friday night ace Rob Evans went down as he stepped off the mound awkwardly, seemingly attempting to go for Jett Kenady’s grounder. Staff raced over to the downed Southpaw, who was clearly in pain. Miami’s left-handed starter was carried off the field, avoiding putting any weight on his left leg. Coach J.D. Arteaga revealed it was an ankle sprain, with no timetable for his return. UM fell 9-2 to start the weekend series. They’ll have to bounce back without star player Daniel Cuvet, who is recovering from wisdom tooth removal.
Welp…. Miami just lost Friday night ace Rob Evans. Looks serious.

The Golden Bears immediately went on the offensive, launching two home runs to make it 3-0, courtesy of Kenady and Lawson Olmstead. Jett went yard again in the seventh. UM got one back during their first trip to the plate. Jake Ogden led off with a double, followed by Max Galvin getting aboard on the error by third baseman Cade Campbell. Derek Williams popped it to centerfield for the sac fly with runners at the corners, plating Ogden. However, the hit turned into a double play when Galvin tried to tag up and beat the throw at second.

Ahead 3-1, California scored again in the second frame. Campbell crossed the plate on the Joshua Hanson grounder to second base. Campbell led off with a hit, then advanced to second on a balk. When Ethan Kodama grounded to third, Gabriel Milano had a chance to erase the lead runner instead choosing the out at first, allowing the scoring opportunity. Things then took a turn for the worse with Evans exiting the game.

In the wake of the brutal mishap, Miami attempted to rally. Williams found himself with runners at the corners again, this time pulling off an RBI single to left field. They never scored after that. The Golden Bears came close to busting the game open in the fourth. Hanson drew the bases-loaded walk, making it 5-2. Jack Durso bent but didn’t break, retiring the next two hitters to escape, giving up the minimum. Although the bullpen did its best, Cal continued to pull away, burying Miami with home runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

It all came apart when Rob Evans went down. Seven of Cal’s 9 runs came via longball. We shall see how long Evans’ absence is, but I’d would be lying if I said there isn’t concern about the season. This is a big blow to the Hurricanes, especially the pitching staff. Furthermore, Evans is needed now more than ever with the remaining weekend schedule (NC State, Louisville, FSU). As they say, next man up. UM has to show the resilience and grit they’ve been preaching.

Absolutely nobody.
You’re Killing Me Smalls
Man, I never thought I’d see Bryaln West here. He went hitless, drawing a single walk. Part of the disappointment is West’s five home runs for 2026. The guy could easily have 15, and despite having a .333 batting average, it hasn’t panned out in the power department.
