Inter Miami Tidbits: Messi Leads MVP Race; Busquets To Retire After 2025 Season

Lionel Messi has been on a tear lately, scoring 5 goals and dishing out 3 assists in Miami’s last three matches, wins over Seattle Sounders, DC United, and New York City FC.

Messi scored a brace and dished out an assist last Tuesday night versus NYCFC. The GOAT served Baltasar Rodriguez a dicey through ball for the Heron’s first score against the Pigeons.

Lionel was on the receiving end of a sensational Sergio Busquets assist in the second half to score his first goal of the night and put Miami up 2-0.

The Goat sealed the night with a dazzling dribbling display past NY defenders and finished with his right foot to secure the brace.

Lionel’s heroics brought his 2025 season totals to 24 goals and 13 assists, placing him in the lead for the MLS Golden Boot race.

Messi became the first player in MLS history to record consecutive seasons with at least 35 goal contributions. His recent form and record-breaking performances have him as the leading candidate for MLS League MVP. If he is to win in 2025, it would be the first time in MLS history that a player has won back-to-back MVPs.

Age is but a number for the Goat; at 38, he is still doing amazing things on the pitch.

Busquets Will Be Gone

Sergio Busquets officially announced that he will retire from the “beautiful game” at the end of the 2025 season with Inter Miami. One of the all-time greats will play the remainder of the season knowing that this is his last hurrah. Hopefully, the Herons can watch him walk off into the sunset with the 2025 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield trophies. In the twilight of his career and in the brief time with the Herons, Busquets still showed his enormous class on the pitch. His shoes will be big shoes to fill for Inter Miami next season.

Rodrigo De Paul

Rodrigo De Paul is the heir apparent to fill Sergio Busquets’ role for Inter Miami in 2026. The Argentine is talented, experienced, and has the pedigree to take on the enormous challenge. It’s never easy to replace a legend, but if he plays to his full abilities, Depaul and Inter Miami should be just fine in 2026.

Noah Allen

Noah Allen achieved a major milestone on Tuesday night versus New York City FC. The popular homegrown defender became the 6th player in team history to play 100 games for Inter Miami CF. Allen had a good match at center-back and at left-back when Jordi Alba was substituted off in the second half. Allen is one of the more consistent and reliable defenders for the Herons, and he has recently signed a new contract extension with Miami, which runs through 2028 with a team option for 2029.

Supporters’ Shield

The Herons have a legitimate chance of repeating as Supporters’ Shield Champions in 2025. Suppose things go Miami’s way, two games in hand over their direct competitors, give Inter Miami a clear path to accomplish the feat. A Supporters’ Shield trophy and an MLS Cup trophy are within reach for Messi and Miami.
