Miami, Florida – The Louisville Cardinals knocked off the second-ranked Miami Hurricanes 24-21, handing them their first defeat of the season. The red birds not only neutralized Carson Beck and the pass rush, but they also nullified the running game. UM was once again plagued by penalties, committing nine for 68 yards. Beck never found the endzone, throwing four interceptions. Despite two touchdowns on the ground, the Canes put up a paltry 63 rushing yards in a new season low. True freshman Malachi Toney was the sole bright spot on offense, catching 9 passes for 135 yards. He also had a rushing TD and slung it to CJ Daniels on the two-point conversion. Louisville’s victory marks the first time in program history that the Cards have beaten an AP Top-2 opponent while unranked.

The visitors got off to a fast start, scoring on their first two possessions. Zechariah Poyser missed a big tackle on the opening drive, allowing Isaac Brown to gain additional yardage, resulting in a 28-yard play reaching Miami’s 12-yard line. Miller Moss ultimately ran it in for the third straight game after the Cards faked a 22-yard field goal. Louisville pounced again after Miami’s first drive got hamstrung by Francis Mauigoa’s unnecessary roughness as Moss hit Chris Bell for the 35-yard touchdown.
Miami battled back with a five-play scoring drive. Beck lobbed a 30-yard pass to CJ Daniels, followed by a 39-yard strike to Toney. Mark Fletcher did the rest with the two-yard push into the endzone. The offense struggled for the rest of the half as Beck recklessly threw two consecutive picks trying to go deep, including one to Toney under triple coverage. These forced errors were completely avoidable, considering there’s no sense of urgency in a contest that was still in its early stages. Carter Davis kept the sputtering offense afloat, nailing two field goals.

Up 17-13, the Cardinals scored early in the fourth via Bell’s second TD of the evening. Then, just when everything seemed lost, Brown, who had torched Miami for 113 yards, fumbled. Toney seized the moment with an unexpected 12-yard rushing TD, followed by a clutch catch by Daniels for two. Although the Cardiac Canes came within a field goal, their comeback hopes were dashed by Beck’s fourth interception.

Impressions
The defeat marks the end of several things: An undefeated season, a first-round bye in the CFP, the Heisman race, and night games after Stanford. I thought Florida was rock bottom for Beck, boy, was I wrong. He quite literally threw himself out of the Heisman conversation. When asked about the final drive and the back-breaking pick, he attributed it to miscommunication on the route. Again, those first two INTs were unnecessary; they provided a confidence boost for the Cardinals. The remarkable aspect is that, despite the Hurricanes turning the ball over four times, the Cardinals scored zero points off them. The defense was far from dominant. However, they made changes in the wake of Louisville’s fast start, allowing ten points from there and coming up with the huge fumble.

Speaking of new lows, I also thought the running game couldn’t get worse. 63 yards? Are you kidding me? Furthermore, the vaunted O-line didn’t open up the lanes, putting more pressure on the quarterback to air it out. Fletcher and CharMar Brown just disappeared. On top of it all, the players remain undisciplined, committing fouls. Simply put, the Miami Hurricanes were outcoached Friday night. Now, they have to win out, and UM still has SMU and Pitt to contend with. To think I actually had them losing to the Cards in the preseason. It is what it is; the fellas have to flush this one and regroup. Soul searching is needed, and it starts with the coaching staff.
