Miami Hurricanes obliterate Mountain Hawks in sweep

Miami, Florida – Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, the Miami Hurricanes smoked them 27-3 on Sunday’s series finale. The shortened contest was the culmination of 57 runs this weekend, the most ever by the Canes in their first three games of a season, shattering the previous record of 50 back in 1988. The record-breaking run support was more than enough for UM starter Tate DeRias, who pitched for nearly five innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits and striking out nine. What makes the effort all the more remarkable is that this was done on two home runs. The effort was seen throughout the lineup.

Cian Copeland led the way, going 3-for-4, plating four runs. Jake Ogden also went 3-for-4, scoring three times. Derek Williams notched three hits of his own, two of those doubles, bringing in a pair. Max Galvin tallied two hits and drove in three runs. Freshman catcher Alonzo Alvarez got his first start of the season, hitting a double and a triple, drawing two walks. Even the bench players got into the act, with the best example being Dylan Dubovik going 2-for-2.

The Hurricanes began the barrage with four runs in the second. Williams led off with a double to left, followed by an RBI single from Copeland. With one out, Michael Torres singled up the middle, knocking in two more. Galvin’s sac fly capped off the effort. Lehigh responded with the longball. Raffaele Rogers homered on an 0-2 count, getting the best of DeRias, who was largely cruising up to that point, cutting the lead in half.

Miami put up another crooked number in the fourth. Galvin mustered an RBI double while Daniel Cuvet hammered his first home run of 2026. Furthermore, Copeland pushed the team’s eighth run via a groundout, bringing in Alex Sosa. In a bid to keep up, Aidan Quinn scored an RBI double during the fifth, ending DeRias’ start. It wouldn’t matter. UM went ham on Lehigh, cranking out the record-breaking 15 runs on 11 hits, chewing through four very unlucky relievers. The Canes added four more in the following frame, rubbing salt on the wound.

Impressions

Good lord, what a beatdown, even by tuneup game standards. For those not keeping track, the Canes outscored their opponent 57-16. The offense is showing glimpses of what it can do, and it has me excited. Although it is early in the season, I am looking forward to the Florida series in a couple of weeks. The bullpen displayed another solid effort. DeRias was good, but I did notice he would get ahead of the hitters and then struggle to close out the at-bat. He threw 96 pitches within five innings. I want to see how next week shakes out since they’ll play six games, including two midweek opponents. Until then, stay frosty!

Gus Bus Award

This one goes to Cian Copeland. The kid drove in four runs and is one of the reasons it’s so hard for coach Arteaga to assemble a lineup. Miami has a lot of options, and Copeland can contribute at first base and DH.

You’re Killing Me Smalls

Tough to believe someone went hitless in this run-fest. Alex Sosa went 0-for-3, striking out twice. You win some, you lose some.
