MIAMI, FL – The FIU Panthers opened their 2025–26 season with a statement win, dismantling Florida National 101–49 on Monday night at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. The dominant performance not only showcased the Panthers’ offensive depth and defensive intensity but also marked head coach Jeremy Ballard’s 99th career victory in his eighth season leading the program.
Larry Olayinka and Zawdie Jackson Lead the Charge
Senior forward Larry Olayinka set the tone early, delivering a commanding 25-point, 7-rebound, 6-steal performance. His presence was felt on both ends of the floor, finishing through contact inside and forcing turnovers that fueled FIU’s transition game.
Hamed Olayinka is just the fifth NCAA player over the last two seasons to record at least 25 points, 7 rebounds and six steals in a game.
In addition, he’s the first Panther to have 6 steals and 7 rebounds in a game since Arturo Dean on 11/29/23 vs. FGCU. pic.twitter.com/cQBCai0qtu

Meanwhile, Zawdie Jackson put together one of the most efficient outings of his career, scoring 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range. His poise and confidence at the guard spot helped FIU control the tempo from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Coach Ballard noted him as a “leader” heading into the season in the presser.
Bench Depth Shines Early
The Panthers’ depth was on full display, with 38 bench points highlighting a balanced effort across the roster. Corey Stephenson contributed 16 points and 8 rebounds, while Brit Harris added 10 points to a perfect 3-of-3 from the field. In total, twelve Panthers found the scoresheet, reflecting a well-rounded performance that kept the energy high throughout the night.
Dominance in the Paint
FIU overwhelmed FNU on the interior, scoring 54 points in the paint and grabbing 19 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second-chance points. The Panthers’ size and athleticism were too much for the Conquistadors to handle, capped off by seven dunks, many of them in transition.

Free Throw Struggles Despite Blowout Win
While nearly everything went right for the Panthers, free throws were the one area that stood out as a weakness. FIU shot just 12-of-26 (46%) from the line. The coaching staff will want to clean up before tougher opponents arrive.
What’s Next
With their first win of the season secured, the Panthers will hit the road to face Big Ten opponent Nebraska on Friday, November 8, at 1:00 PM. The matchup will provide an early test for FIU as they look to carry their momentum against a Power Five opponent.
