Miami, Florida – The season opener has finally arrived for the Miami Hurricanes, and their first game will be a West Coast trek facing the Stanford Cardinal. UM’s latest edition of ACC After Dark will be against a team that has already started its schedule. Stanford defeated Hawaii 37-27 in week 0, getting a head start on shaking off some rust. Although they led for much of the contest, their defense struggled late in the game, giving up 20 fourth-quarter points trailing with just over four minutes to go. Stanford rallied by scoring a touchdown and returning a fumble recovery for a score.

The Cardinal may have a leg up on generating team chemistry, but Miami has tape to prepare. Their quarterback is a Michigan transfer, while the running back is an explosive junior coming off a strong start to the season. Stanford’s defense is anchored by a linebacker who had 106 tackles last year, the highest individual tackle total seen at Stanford since 2015. He nearly doubled his teammates. The Hurricanes serve as a dramatic increase in difficulty and their hardest test of the season (until they visit Notre Dame). If Hawaii could put up 27, imagine what The U can do. Stanford is led by new coach Tavita Pritchard, who spent nearly 13 years on the program’s coaching staff.

Stanford’s new signal caller spent all of 2025 recovering from an ACL injury suffered during the ReliaQuest Bowl on December 31, 2024, against Alabama. Davis Warren is a pocket passer who has a decent arm but is prone to turnovers. Warren threw nine interceptions in 2024, something the Canes will likely pounce on. Facing the Rainbow Warriors, he completed 22 of 34 passes for 310 yards and one touchdown.

The leader of the ground game, Micah Ford nearly hit the centennial mark, rushing for 99 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Ford totaled 643 last year, hitting the end zone four times. He’s trending towards surpassing those numbers, making a bout against UM’s line an interesting dynamic to watch this Friday. Ford has power and lateral quickness, marking him as a key player to watch since Stanford might lean run-heavy, at least initially.

Atticus Joseph caught the lone TD, one of four catches for 52 yards. His freshman debut was the first Stanford Cardinal player to record over 50 receiving yards and a touchdown since Christian McCaffrey in 2014. The multi-sport athlete was a consensus three-star recruit, ranked as high as the No. 14 wide receiver recruit in Georgia per 247Sports.

The senior had a breakout year and is ready to lead the defense against an explosive unit, using his relentless pursuit, high-end open-field tackling, and disruptive blitzing. Matt Rose led the team with nine tackles, four solo, complemented by a tackle-for-loss versus Hawaii. Rose also had a trio of pass deflections and sacks for 2025, so the offense needs to plan accordingly. With his leadership and elite tackling, it’s easy to see why he’s a key player at Stanford.

The curtain is about to rise for Darian Mensah. For the third straight season, UM is starting a transfer quarterback. Mensah threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns for the Blue Devils, leading Duke to its first outright ACC title since 1962. He enters the season in the Heisman conversation, with Stanford being his first opportunity. Given the way Hawaii performed against the Cardinal, Mensah will throw at least three touchdowns.

Miami has significantly improved at wide receiver. Not only do they have 2025 ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year Malachi Toney, but the Hurricanes also acquired Mensah’s favorite wideout at Duke. Cooper Barkate caught 72 passes for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 15.4 yards per catch. The key question is how Mensah will manage the dynamic of two 1,000-yard wideouts. Makes me wonder who will nab the first TD of the season.

Believe it or not, Mohamed Toure is in his eighth year due to a unique combination of standard redshirts, medical redshirts, and the COVID waiver. Toure led the team with 84 tackles, including two sacks. Considering the lack of depth at linebacker, his veteran presence will be important. He was officially named to the Butkus Award Watch List as one of the nation’s top linebackers ahead of the season opener. Let’s see how he does at Stanford.

Part of the lock-down duo with OJ Frederique, Xavier Lucas is looking to improve in the interception department. Lucas’ coverage was stellar overall, recording 45 tackles, eight deflections, a forced fumble, and an INT. Currently projected to go on Day 2 of the 2027 NFL Draft, a strong year could propel him into the first round. Building on last year’s 16 interceptions baseline, UM looks to boost its defensive production.
Prediction
Some say this is a trap game. I say no way. Sure, Stanford has a game under its belt, and it’s a West Coast battle, but The U is coming prepared. Forget that it’s on a Friday. I saw some clips of the Hawaii game, and the opposing defense looks a bit slow. I’m not worried about the offense, although I want to see how stingy the defense is. Barkate will notch the team’s first TD of the year, and the Cardiac Canes will produce over 400 yards of total offense, thanks in part to Mark Fletcher Jr. Miami is going 1-0, winning 34-13.
