Maya Maxwell Named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week

Maya Maxwell was named Conference USA Player of the Week after she recorded six total points against the Howard Bison. She is the first Panther to notch the honor this season. Maxwell finished the Howard match with two goals & two assists making her mark on the field.

“I am honored to receive the CUSA Player of the Week award,” Maxwell told Lemon City Live. “To me, it’s just a reflection of the work our team has put in as a collective and that we are not a group that should be counted out. It’s a good stepping stone to drive us into the rest of non-conference play and eventually conference, which is what our eyes are set on. This group is hungry, and our standard is high for each individual because we want to win, so it’s always nice to see it pay off.”

In the opening minutes, FIU got on the board with a Mariana Barreto goal, assisted by Maya Maxwell. Mariana returned the favor by assisting Maxwell to give FIU a 2-0 lead. Securing her first Panther goal of the year.

Once the second half rolled around, we saw her back in action. Within the opening minutes of the second half, she put the Panthers up 4-0, securing her first career brace. In the final ten minutes, FIU took a 5-1 lead after a Leyla Molina goal assisted by… you guessed it, Maya Maxwell.

Maxwell’s career day gave FIU their first win of the season. Her career night was the first time a Panther has reached six points in a match since 2024. The last FIU player to do so was Noemi Paquin, who later earned CUSA Player of the Year honors.

Back At Home

The No. 13 UCF will travel to Leyva Family Field to take on the Panthers Sept 3rd on ESPN+. UCF is coming in with a chip on their shoulder after FIU pulled off an upset last year. This will be the first time FIU hosts UCF since 2015, when the Panthers lost 1-0.
