FIU men’s soccer (2-1-1, Conf. 0-0) earned back-to-back wins at home after defeating St. Thomas University. The victory moves FIU into fifth place in the American Conference standings.
The Panthers struck first in the 35th minute when Ezequiel Gonzalez found the back of the net for his first goal of the season, giving FIU a 1–0 lead.

Later in the match, Jad Benjelloun added another goal to extend the Panthers lead to 2–0. The goal marked his first of the season and came off an assist from Mateo Stickler, also his first of the season.
FIU’s defense contained the Bobcats throughout the match, holding the visitors to just two shots with only one on goal. Goalkeeper Nigel Van Haveren recorded his second clean sheet of the season, making one save on the night.
The match came to an early end in the 77th minute after lightning in the area forced officials to call the game.
What’s next
After back-to-back home games, the Panthers hit the road for a two-game trip. FIU first travels to Queens, N.Y., to take on St. John’s University on Sunday. The two programs last met in Queens during the 2022 season, when the Panthers earned a 1–0 victory. FIU will look to repeat that success as it searches for its third straight win.
The Panthers then open conference play on the road against Missouri State. FIU faced the Bears twice last season, once during the regular season and again in the American Conference Tournament, winning both matchups. The Panthers will look to continue that success against a familiar conference opponent.
Following the two-game road trip, FIU returns home on Sept. 19 to host the Drake University Bulldogs at Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium.
