Malachi Toney breaks record as Hurricanes steamroll Stanford 45-6

Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes set the tone with a statement win over Stanford, capped by Malachi Toney breaking the single-game receiving yards record. Eddie Brown (220) set the 42-year school record in 1984. Toney recorded 12 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns, getting started on his Heisman bid. What makes it more remarkable is that this was achieved within three quarters by the 2025 ACC Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year. Additionally, the Darian Mensah era has begun. The Duke transfer completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five TDs, announcing his own candidacy.

Mensah’s first pass was a 48-yard connection to Toney. Malachi also nabbed the team’s first TD on a 23-yard floater, capping off UM’s first drive of the season. Miami led from wire to wire, dominating injury-riddled Stanford. The Hurricanes were in complete control, up 28-6 at halftime. The Cardinal would never score in the second half. Miami’s former secret weapon wasn’t the only one producing plays. The dynamic duo went on full display as Cooper Barkate totaled four catches for 67 yards and a TD. Early in the third quarter, the Canes’ drive began with Mark Fletcher Jr., who rushed for a combined 14 yards, complemented by a nine-yard pass from Mensah. Darian went up the middle, hitting Barkate for the 34-yard score to make it 35-6. Daylyn Upshaw also completed his own TD during the second quarter.

Toney followed up, shattering the long-standing record via a 47-yard touchdown pass. UM put up 549 total yards, including 121 on the ground. Fletcher had 13 carries for 40 yards, while CharMar Brown rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts. Javian Mallory saw some snaps, recording three carries for 31 yards. Defensively, Stanford was held to 299 total yards.

Armondo Blount had the key sack on second and goal, ultimately forcing Stanford to settle for three. Omar Thornton notched three tackles, including a tackle for loss and a deflection. Marquise Lightfoot led with 9 tackles and Xavier Lucas recorded two PDs.

Impressions

The Miami Hurricanes kicked off their 2026 season in style! Their largest conference win since 2020. They blew away my score prediction (34-13) and are exceeding early expectations. Sure, it’s only the first game and a lower-quality team, but starting 1-0 is required. Speaking of expectations, Mensah is definitely meeting mine. He’s gelling nicely with Malachi Toney and still giving others looks, albeit to a lesser degree. I thought Barkate would get the first touchdown. UM went 8-for-11 on third downs and dominated time of possession.

Despite the score, the defense will remain monitored. Stanford managed a few big plays, although they definitely shot themselves in the foot several times. Special teams had a mistake in the third quarter. The ball deflected off Damari Brown on the punt, and Stanford recovered the fumble with superb field position. Fortunately for the Hurricanes, the officials reviewed the play and determined that the ball had clipped a Stanford player before hitting Brown, negating the miscue. Miami committed five penalties, costing them 50 yards. Their opponents committed nine for 70. My biggest issue on defense was that we forced zero takeaways; this won’t fly against better opponents. On a minor note, backup quarterback Luke Nickel threw a pick in a very small sample size. Regardless of the nitpicking,  enjoy the opening victory. Next up: Florida A&M for the home opener.
