Carlos Arroyo Inducted to FIU Athletics Hall of Fame

MIAMI, FL – Former FIU Basketball point guard Carlos Arroyo has been inducted into the 2026 FIU Athletics Hall of Fame. Arroyo spent all four years of his collegiate career with the program. As a member of FIU’s basketball team, he was a star with a distinguished career, becoming the second player in program history to play in the NBA (Raja Bell) and having his jersey (30) retired in 2007.

Arroyo set FIU records that still stand: most points in a game (39), most assists in a game (13), most 20-point games in a season (21), and most consecutive double-digit scoring games (37). In his career, Arroyo leads the program in assists (459) and ranks second all-time in points (1,601). His 616 points in 2000-01 is the all-time top-scoring season and the only 600+ point season in FIU history.

Team Puerto Rico Career

Carlos Arroyo is best known as a premier international point guard. Aside from his prominence in college and professionally, he was a sensation for his country’s national team, where his jersey (7) was retired by the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation. With Team Puerto Rico, Arroyo led his team to 12 international medals, including six Golds.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Arroyo was a hero for the Puerto Rican national team, leading with 18 points per game. Notably, he led his country to a 92-73 win over the United States with 25 points, seven assists, and four steals. Arroyo earned All-Olympic Team honors.

In the 2006 FIBA World Championship, he averaged 21.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game in five games for Puerto Rico. He was tied for fourth in PPG. Arroyo played in the 2008 Olympic Qualifying Tournament but didn’t appear in the semifinals and finals because of a leg injury.

He played as a shooting guard at the 2010 CentroBasket, where Puerto Rico beat Panama in the semifinals and the Dominican Republic in the finals to win Gold. Arroyo averaged 6.3 assists and led the tournament with 19.3 points per game, earning a spot in the All-Star Team, where he won MVP.

After retiring as an international player in 2016, Arroyo became the general manager of Team Puerto Rico in June 2021. Puerto Rico qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics after defeating Italy in the semifinals and Lithuania in the final of the 2024 FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.

Europe Comeback

In December 2011, Carlos Arroyo signed a contract with the Turkish club Beşiktaş Milangaz for the remainder of the 2011-12 season. The following month, he was invited to participate in the league All-Star Game. He contributed 13 points, two rebounds, and 13 assists. Arroyo came in clutch with a last-second three-pointer to give his team a close 140-139 victory.

He led his team to a Turkish Basketball Cup title that same season. Arroyo averaged 28.4 minutes, 14 points, and 4.5 assists per game with a 47% three-point percentage. He also helped his team win the EuroChallenge, averaging 10.7 points and 3.6 assists per game.

In June 2012, Arroyo helped his team win the Turkish Super League Championship by beating the Anadolu Efes squad in the Turkish League Finals. He was the Turkish Super League Finals MVP after finishing the final game with 18 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.

Arroyo signed with Galatasaray Medical Park of the Turkish Basketball Super League in January 2013. On June 15, 2023, Galatasaray won the BSL Championship after beating Banvit B.K. 76-58. Arroyo scored 15 points and had eight assists in that game. After re-signing for another year, Arroyo led them to another BSL final against Fenerbahçe Ülker.

NBA Return

On October 11, 2009, Carlos Arroyo signed a non-guaranteed contract with the Miami Heat after establishing himself in Pinecrest, Florida. Over the final two months of the 2009-10 season, he saw more playing time, averaging nine points and 4.5 assists per game. He finished the season with a 4.27-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, second to just Chris Paul. In the first round of the playoffs against the Boston Celtics, Arroyo averaged 6.8 points and 2.2 assists in five starts.

Later that month, Arroyo signed a veteran minimum contract with the Celtics. He scored four points (2/3 FG), grabbed three rebounds, tallied two assists, and made a steal in 15 minutes of play in his Celtic debut. His last NBA game came on April 13, 2011, when he contributed six points, four assists, and three rebounds in a 112-102 win over the New York Knicks.

First NBA/Europe Stint

He joined the Utah Jazz in the 2002-03 season and averaged 6.5 minutes in 44 games, but he became a starter in 2003-04. In 71 starts, he posted career highs of 28.3 minutes, 12.6 points, 5.0 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game. Arroyo scored a career-high 30 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves on November 14, which was the second-most points scored in an NBA game by a Puerto Rican player.

In 2006-07, Arroyo played in 72 games, averaging 7.7 points, 2.8 assists, and 1.9 rebounds per game. He saw more playing time in 62 games in 2007-08, making 20 starts, averaging 20.5 minutes, 6.9 points, 3.1 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per game.

During the summer of 2008, he signed a $7.5 million three-year deal with the Israeli League team Maccabi Tel Aviv. At the end of the 2008-09 season, he won the Israeli League and was named the Israeli Basketball Premier League Finals MVP. Arroyo opted out of his contract after averaging 15.3 points (51.6% 2FGP) in 31 minutes per game.

FIU Seasons

As a sophomore in 1998-99, he averaged 12.5 points, 4.7 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 20 games. FIU tied for third in the Sun Belt with a 13-16 record and reached the semifinals. In 1999-00, Arroyo averaged 17.7 points, 5.2 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 36.0 minutes per game. Along with the 39 points he scored on December 30, 2000, at North Texas, his 15 made field goals on 29 attempts are also single-game records for the Panthers. FIU went 16-14 and finished fourth in the conference but was a first-round exit.

Early Years and Career

Arroyo’s professional career started at age 17 with the Baloncesto Superior Nacional of Puerto Rico. He debuted with the Cariduros of Fajardo in 1996 and averaged 10.9 points on 52% shooting. The next season, he averaged 17 points and 5.5 assists per game while shooting 42% from behind the arc.

After that, he played for the Cangrejeros de Santruce and in 2000, he averaged 17.1 points and 3.9 assists per contest. With the team, he led the Cangrejeros to four straight national titles in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001, and 2003, winning five championships in six years.

Arroyo was born and raised in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. He graduated from Colegio Santiago Apostol in Fajardo, and he attended Brookwood School in Thomasville, Georgia, during his junior year of high school, where he averaged nearly 30 points and 10 assists per game.
