MIAMI, FL – Today marked the return of Brandon Woodruff for his first start on a big-league mound in nearly two years. He was able to keep the Marlins lineup in check, limiting them to just two hits. Even after he was taken out of the game, the hitting for the Marlins was bleak. Edward Cabrera pitched a solid seven innings, but it wasn’t enough. Brandon Woodruff set the tone in the game, and the Brewers beat the Marlins 3-1.
Bats go quiet for the Marlins
Woodruff didn’t skip a beat in his first start back since September 23, 2023. In his six innings of work, the two-time All-Star struck out eight Marlins hitters. His command was on point, and the Fish couldn’t figure out what pitch was next.
He did give up a run during the contest, and it was a solo home run to Heriberto Hernandez. Woodruff had thrown Hernandez two straight sinkers and then threw a sweeper, which left the ballpark at 108.2 MPH.

Hernandez was the only Marlin who found success at the plate, going 2-for-3. The Marlins had a total of three hits, with Otto Lopez being the other.
Edward Cabrera throws another seven-inning game
Cabrera had his second consecutive seven-inning game but wound up getting the loss this time around. Despite that, there were still some positives to take away from his pitching.
The biggest takeaway for Edward Cabrera is that he didn’t issue any walks on the mound. It was his first start since July 13, 2024, where he didn’t allow any free passes to 1st base.
Cabrera’s only hiccup in the game was giving up a two-run home run to Jackson Chourio in the 3rd inning. Chourio had all the RBIs for the Brewers. He hit a sac fly in the 8th inning.
Edward Cabrera was able to hit the strike zone on 60 pitches out of his 90 pitches. He struck out five batters, his ninth consecutive game with at least five punchouts.
The curveball, changeup, sinker, and slider were all used evenly, with the 4-seam fastball being used the least. Cabrera had great velocity throughout the game, even in his last inning. He was firing on all cylinders in the mid 90s.

The Marlins have been patient in the development of Edward Cabrera and today was another great example of him being the best version of himself.
Jim Leyland Marlins Legends Hall of Fame
Before the game, Jim Leyland became the second individual in franchise history to be inducted into the Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. In his first season with the club, Leyland led the team to their first-ever World Series championship. The Marlins, in their fifth season (1997) at the time, had become the fastest expansion team to win the World Series. After a disappointing 1998 season, Leyland resigned as manager. In his two seasons as skipper of the Florida Marlins, the three-time manager of the year went 146-178. Leyland was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024.
