Miami, FL – The Miami Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers squared off on Monday night at Loan Depot Park. Los Angeles just had their seven-game winning streak snapped last night but they still entered the series proving that they’re more than capable of making another deep postseason run. The Fish on the other hand, provided the same production we’ve been used to seeing over the last few weeks already.
Slots 1 through 9 in the Dodgers batting order were pretty much impactful in some form. Meanwhile, it was another game for the Marlins where the starter allowed runs and got worked out of the game by the 5th inning. Alas, the skid continues for Sandy Alcantara in tonight’s 7-4 loss to the Dodgers.
Sandy’s skid continues
Sandy Alcantara has continued to struggle in his starts following his return from Tommy John Surgery. Each time there was a man on base, a subsequent batter would come up to the plate and cash in on the RBI.
Alcantara ran into some early trouble in the first inning. After making a strong opening statement and striking out Shohei Ohtani, he allowed a base hit to Mookie Betts. Two batters later, Teoscar Hernandez capitalized on the changeup and lined up a sharply hit double to drive in Ohtani.
In the third inning, Alcantara issued a walk to Ohtani, who has been dangerous with his baserunning abilities this season. Ohtani was able to take off to second for his 10th stolen base of the season. Two batters later, Freddie Freeman stepped up to the plate. After missing a changeup, he crushed a four-seam fastball down the plate into centerfield. His home run tied Ryan Howard and Ryan Zimmerman for the most career homers against the Marlins with 41.

Inning number five wasn’t kind at all for Sandy Alcantara either. Korean All-Star Hyeseong Kim, cranked out his first-career hit. Ohtani stepped up to the plate afterwards and displayed his dangerous offensive prowess. After a full count battle, he waited for the pitch he wanted to see. A 97.7 MPH four-seam fastball down the middle was launched to right center field.
After 87 pitches and 5.0 innings, Sandy Alcantara’s night is over.
He allowed 6 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk, and 2 home runs.
He did double the amount of strikeouts from last week with 4.
Still, his ERA shot up from 8.31 to 8.42.

Gus Bus hits a BOMB
The home fans at Loan Depot Park were understandably quiet for most of the game. That is, until Agustin Ramirez stepped up to the batter’s box with Jesus Sanchez and Dane Myers on base.
After fouling off a sweeper on the first try, Ramirez connected on the next pitch and he hit a bomb to left center field. It was certainly the push the Marlins needed in the right direction to get some action going on offense.
Well hit home run by Gus Bus, which had an exit velo of 109.1 MPH

Unfortunately, that was all they would get. Even with 10 hits on the board, they only managed to total four runs.
Final thoughts
It’s apparent that the starting pitching for the Marlins has been their weakest link all season. With Ryan Weathers and Eury Perez on the horizon set to return from injury, there’s hope that some improvement will come. Still, Sandy Alcantara’s setback this season was definitely not anticipated by anyone.
The Marlins have been able to rack up hits in games this season, but they have also failed to put up some quality runs with men on base. Guys like Matt Mervis, Xavier Edwards, and Eric Wagaman each had their chances to come up with a productive at bat with runners in scoring position. However, they ended up striking out or putting the ball in play for an out.
If these issues persist, then the Marlins will just continue to sink in the standings and have yet another throw away season.
