MIAMI, FL – The FIU Sunblazers got the job done tonight with a stress-free, 34-13 blowout win over New Mexico State – something they haven’t done in a while this season.
Following three straight losses, FIU needed to get back on track in this game if it wanted to keep the possibility of getting into a bowl game alive.
To that end, they balled out on offense, defense, and special teams and took advantage of a struggling Aggies squad.
The first half of football went by rather quickly, with the Sunblazers holding on to a 7-6 lead. After that, FIU scored 27 points in the second half, including 13 unanswered to kick things off. The Aggies couldn’t keep up, and the rest was history.
Cry Me A River
FIU’s offense had possibly their most impressive game of the season, which is saying a lot considering the high-scoring games against Central Michigan and Monmouth.
Following one of his worst games as a Panther in which he was benched, Keyone Jenkins had a comeback game for the ages, throwing 18 completions for 338 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions.
His favorite weapon, Eric Rivers, had the game of his life. With 295 yards and three touchdowns, Rivers set the all-time single-game receiving yards record in style, highlighted by a 62-yard bomb to seal the win.
That’s Worth A Compliment
FIU’s offensive success was complimented by an impressive showing from the defense. Their pass rush and secondary worked in harmony to limit New Mexico State to just 30 total passing yards.
In fairness, the Aggies’ rushing game was solid, with 216 total yards and their only touchdown of the game. But FIU’s rush defense adjusted as the game went on and was backed by a subpar pass offense.
When New Mexico State wanted to throw, they were met by Hezekiah Masses and Jojo Evans, who both recorded interceptions. CJ Christian, who entered back into the lineup following an injury, recorded seven solo tackles.
Even FIU’s special teams were on point. Alejandro Prado nailed two field goals, including a 38-yarder – his longest as a Panther.
With the win, the Panthers move to 3-6. They’ll have the upcoming week off, then will head to Alabama for a matchup against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on November 16th.
