MIAMI, FL – Following their back-to-back losses, FIU Football was desperate for a win and did just enough to get it done today by a final score of 17-10 over Louisiana Tech.
It wasn’t pretty, but the Panthers were spearheaded by a solid performance by the defense, who turned things around after giving up 45 points to Monmouth last week.
They shut out the Bulldogs in the first half, then only allowed 10 points following halftime.
Probably the biggest turning point of the game was the goal-line stand in the second quarter. With the ball near the goal line, the defense held firm and denied their rushing game on fourth down.
Initially called a touchdown, the ruling was overturned.
Keyone Jenkins had a solid game with 208 passing yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions, though he was sacked three times – one of which forced him out of the game for a play.
Jenkins went back in and capped off the drive with a pass to Eric Rivers in the back of the end zone.
Lexington Joseph had a performance that head coach Mike Macintyre regarded as a “Classic Flex” game with 75 yards and a touchdown off of 13 carries.
He had the chance to score a touchdown on their final drive but chose to slide instead, forgoing another score to burn more time off the clock.
Overall, the Panthers looked good in a barn-burner that they weren’t favored in. The defense looked great, while the offense could have looked better.
With a 2-3 record, they’ll have some extra time to rest and recover, as they’ll have the upcoming week off. They’ll then head to Lynchburg, Virginia to take on the undefeated Liberty Flames on Tuesday, October 8th at 7pm.
