FIU Football Stunned By Monmouth In Homecoming Nightmare

MIAMI, FL – What felt like an impossibility has become a painful reality as FIU Football has lost to an FCS school in their Homecoming game.

With a 1-3 record in the nonconference schedule, it feels like a proper time to panic about the remainder of the season and some jobs along the way.

Monmouth beat FIU by a score of 45-42. The Panthers scored 42 points against an FCS opponent and did not win.

First, the defense was abysmal – one of the worst performances of the group in years, maybe dating back to their 73-0 loss against WKU.

We knew going into this that Monmouth had one of the better FCS offenses statistically, but to allow 540 total yards and five fourth-down conversions is unacceptable considering the circumstances.

The defense made some plays, such as the Travion Barnes pick-six in the first drive. They forced a field goal with under two minutes to go to give FIU a chance to win the game.

But it was the offense that made the final mistakes of the game. After not turning the ball over all game, FIU fumbled in their last two drives of the game, including at the one-yard line down by three points.

Keyone Jenkins broke his single-game passing yards record with 362 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. But to have one of his best performances as a Panther wasted on this game is a massive disappointment.

The rushing game has now struggled in back-to-back games as they managed 114 yards across five rushers.

Still, if you put up 42 points against just about any FCS squad, that should be more than enough to win.

FIU will host Louisiana Tech next week on Saturday, September 28th at 6pm.
