Venezuela Advances to First WBC Championship Game After Defeating Italy 4-2

Venezuela vs Italy WBC Semi Finals 8/16/2026

Miami, FL– Italy’s Cinderella story has come to an end in the 2026 World Baseball Classic after losing to Venezuela 4-2. This game marked the first time Italy had reached the semi-finals in their WBC history, but facing Venezuela would not be easy, as Italy entered the game with a 0-5 record against them in WBC action.

Italy Strikes First

In the bottom of the second, Venezuela’s starting pitcher, Keider Montero, ran into some trouble. After getting Vinnie Pasquantino to ground out for the first out of the inning, Montero gave up a single to Zach Dezenzo. Jac Caglianone and Andrew Fischer followed up by working a walk each to load the bases.

Italy’s patience at the plate continued to pay off when the next batter, J.J. D’Orazio, drew a third consecutive walk against Montero to bring Dezenzo for the first run of the ballgame. Montero’s night on the mound was over, and Venezuela’s manager, Omar Lopez, brought in left-hander Ricardo Sanchez out of the bullpen.

Venezuela is on the Board

Italy scratched across two runs early on and must have felt in good shape with their ace, Aaron Nola, on the mound. He continued his dominance on the mound in this WBC, throwing four innings on one-run ball, surrendering four hits, and striking out three. As mentioned, he did give up one run in his outing, and that was in the top of the fourth when Eugenio SuƔrez got Venezuela on the board with a solo home run.

Nola completed the fourth inning, which capped off an impressive run in this year’s WBC. The Phillies starter threw nine innings, striking out eight with a 1.00 ERA. The only run he gave up was the home run to Suarez.

Venezuela Breaks Through in the Seventh

The next pitcher for Italy after Nola’s four innings was Michael Lorenzen. The right-hander threw a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, but it’s hard to keep a lineup like Venezuela’s to one run all game. In the top of the seventh, Gleyber Torres led off with a walk. Andres Gimenez pinch ran for Torres.

Wilyer Abreu and William Contreras were unable to move Gimenez over into scoring position after each struck out. Jackson Chourio kept the inning alive with a single to center field, moving Gimenez to third base, and that sparked a two-out rally.
Ronald Acuna Jr. kept the lineup moving and left his mark in today’s game with his speed after he tied the game 2-2 with an infield single. With runners on first and second, Maikel Garcia singled to left field, bringing in Chourio, and Acuna Jr. advanced to third. Now leading 3-2, up came Luis Arraez, who is making a great case for being named the tournament MVP. He continued to support his case with an RBI single to bring in Acuna Jr.

All Italy needed to get was one more out, but Venezuela rallied to take the lead, and now Italy was down to their last nine outs to either tie or send the game to extra innings. The back-end trio of Venezuela’s bullpen with Bazardo, Machado, and Palencia locked it down, each pitching a scoreless frame. Each out recorded, the louder the fans were getting at loanDepot Park and once that final out was made a sellout crowd of over 36,000 fans erupted.

WBC Championship

Venezuela advances to the WBC Championship game for the first time in its country’s history and will take on the United States. The U.S. looks to regain the championship title after losing to Japan in 2023 and winning it in 2017. For Italy, although it was not the result they wanted, they still made history for their country as this marked the furthest they have ever reached in the WBC.
Veteran left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will be on the mound for Venezuela as they take on Nolan McLean. This is an interesting move for the Americans and Manager Mark DeRosa, going with the 24-year-old right-hander. McLean made his MLB debut this past season in August, starting eight games with a 5-1 record and a 2.06 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
