CORAL GABLES, FL – The Canes downed the #11-ranked Tar Heels at the Watsco Center in an ACC conference matchup last night. Both teams entered the matchup looking to add their eighth win in conference play. UM came off a 74-68 win vs Boston College a few nights ago, dominating on both sides of the ball. Holding opponents under 42% from the floor while shooting over 50% themselves throughout the season. The Canes’ dominance would carry over into their upset 75-66 victory vs #11 UNC.
Tight Battle at the Break
UM took the lead with the first bucket of the night and seemingly never looked back. UNC struggled to get to the free-throw line, shooting just one attempt before the half to UM’s six. Despite UNC not getting to the line, they did shoot very well in the first half at just over 55%. The Tar Heels made it rain from behind the arc, shooting 7/13 before the end of the half. Even so, the Canes would shoot at just above 58% from the floor to maintain their 3-point lead heading into the locker room.

Although this was a close contest all night, the Tar Heels were not able to take the lead in this game. The Tar Heels’ offensive struggles ultimately led to their loss, shooting just 30% from behind the arc. UNC standout freshman Caleb Wilson (20 ppg) has been on a tear this season, leading his team in (PPG, rebounds, steals, and blocks). However, the Canes managed to minimize his impact last night, holding him to a season low of 12 points.
The Canes were led by Senior Malik Reneau, who scored or assisted on 6 of the final 8 points in the closing minutes of the game. Hitting clutch free throws to seal the win, Malik ended the night with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. However, he was not the only one to do the dirty work; Ernest Udeh Jr and Tre Donaldson stood out with their star performances down the stretch. Ernest ended with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Tre scored 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. Tre and Ernest would ignite the home crowd in the final 5 minutes of the game, keeping the pressure on UNC until the clock hit zero.
