The Bulls are 1-0 coming off a home win against UAlbany, while the Panthers are 0-1 after a road loss to South Florida. FIU doesn’t have to wait much longer to correct their mistakes from last week’s competitive loss.
The Panthers make their home debut this Saturday and look to add a win to the column for the first time this season. This is the first matchup between the FIU Panthers and Buffalo Bulls.
For FIU, their offense is at stake in having a breakthrough game. JJ Kohl has proved he can provide the Panthers with a steady passing game after throwing for 301 yards last weekend. However, they need to score more points in their home opener, and that begins with having a better run game. FIU totaled just 85 yards on 25 attempts. Antony Carrie and Devonte Lyons should get more looks against the Bulls.
Kohl should be able to get 30-40 completions, but it will be important that he isn’t predictable. Against USF, he completed 31 passes on 50 attempts. His longest pass in that game was for 29 yards, but most of his yardage came after the catch. Against Buffalo, he should get the green light to throw deep downfield.
“At times where we needed the spark, I felt like I could have done a better job of getting a spark going and helping guys on the sideline and communicating a little bit better.”
Maguire Anderson is another player to watch. He posted a career high in receptions (8) and yards (87) against the USF Bulls. Anderson is a productive target for Kohl to build around and will be relied upon more to make explosive plays. Eric Nelson, Jojo Stone, and Kyle McNeal each had at least four receptions for 43 yards. The question is whether this group can convert on additional third downs.
If the Panthers can make several explosive plays throughout the game, that could be the deciding factor. FIU’s offensive line did an exceptional job in protecting Kohl last week, allowing just one sack, and that will be key once again on Saturday. Getting their receivers to find more open lanes should make it easier to prevent them from settling for field goals. Also, FIU must improve on the turnover battle.
Can the Defense Replicate Its Success?
Despite the Bulls walking out of last week’s game victorious, it wasn’t a comfortable win either. Now, they have to face an FIU team that faced a tougher offense. Quarterback Elijah Holmes made his debut for Buffalo, going 26/47 with 189 yards and three touchdowns. Chance Morrow caught each of those touchdowns and had seven catches for 48 yards. This duo will test FIU’s secondary.
The Panthers’ defense showed it’s capable of giving its opponent a tough night on the field, as they did last week. Buffalo totaled 340 yards on offense against UAlbany, and the question for the Panthers is whether their defense can stop the Bulls from reaching the end zone too many times. Holmes has talent, but FIU can make him uncomfortable and pressure him in third-down territory.
Buffalo is searching for its first non-conference road win since October 15, 2022, when they beat UMass 34-7. They are a physical team that can sustain drives, stay ahead of the chains, and make FIU tackle. DeAndre Boykins put up nine tackles, and Wesley Miller had six at USF. Meanwhile, Shamir Sterlin had just three. He should be able to improve and give the secondary its first interception of the season.
“I'm a physical kind of player. I try to pride myself on my physicality and my speed to the ball. So that spot is specific for those things. So I like to I embrace the position.”
The Bulls can run as well; their rushers totaled 151 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per carry. They will pressure FIU’s defense on the ground and through the air with quick outs, screens, and slant plays. FIU’s pass rush should improve from last week, after Deejay Holmes Jr. was the only defensive lineman with a sack.
Who Will Win – FIU or Buffalo?
This should be a competitive game with Buffalo giving FIU their money’s worth on defense. However, FIU has enough offensive talent to rebound from last week and turn that experience into a week two victory. Kohl should be able to build on his Panther debut and find more open lanes. Expect both teams to have time-consuming drives, making this a low-possession, low-scoring type of game.
FIU needs to finish its drives in this game and turn its total yardage into more touchdowns instead of field goals and punts. Home-field advantage and red-zone efficiency will be key for FIU. The Panthers have an opportunity to make a statement win at home in Willie Simmons’ second season.
He’s a diehard 305 native who roots for his hometown teams in the good, the bad, and the ugly. Recently, he graduated from FIU with an MBA, but now he’s a Lemonhead covering UM basketball. Known to be anywhere and everywhere, you may catch him at a Miami sporting event.
