Miami, Florida – The Southern Miss Golden Eagles overwhelmed the Miami Hurricanes 17-6, keeping their season alive and placing UM’s precariously on the edge. Not even two hours after eliminating Columbia 8-1 to advance to the Hattiesburg final, the hosts barraged Freshman starter Tate DeRias and the Hurricanes for 9 runs on seven hits, throwing them into a hole they’d never climb out of. DeRias entered the game with a 3.98 ERA, hoping to advance his team to the super regional. He didn’t make it out of the first inning.

Jake Cook led off with a single to left field, advancing to second on the Joey Urban groundout that required a video review to overturn the initial safe call. DeRias walked Nick Monistere before Matthew Russo hit another RBI single to right field. Drey Barrett hit a grounder, but the Canes couldn’t turn two on the slow roller, setting up Ben Higdon for the next RBI hit. It was the beginning of the end.

DeRias beaned Tucker Stockman as Southern Miss followed up with three straight hits, pushing across multiple runs as Urban capped off the nine-run assault with a three-run blast. The Golden Eagles led 10-0 before the Cardiac Canes finally responded with five unanswered runs, but the deficit was too big to overcome. Southern Miss added seven more runs in the last three innings.

Tanner Smith homered during the second frame, putting UM on the board. Smith finished the night going 2-for-3, including two runs and a RBI. Miami didn’t score again until the fifth when Michael Torres hit an RBI single. He ended the night 2-for-4. Jake Odgen added to the tally that same inning, hitting the lone two-run double. Dorian Gonzalez, Jr., managed the last gasp of the inning. With the loss, the Miami Hurricanes have one last chance to advance Monday night. If they do, UM faces Louisville.

Impressions

Although we’ve all known about the pitching weaknesses, it’s still shocking that it was over before Miami got its first at-bat. I am amazed at the Golden Eagles’ offensive output. Southern Miss racked up 25 runs in a day to stay alive. That’s impressive. I was hoping the hosts would be fatigued, but we saw nothing of the sort. This is it, do or die for Miami. Without a doubt, they can do this…will they?
