Miami, Florida – After a nearly two-and-a-half-hour lightning delay the Miami Hurricanes routed the Ball State Cardinals 62-0 improving to 3-0 on the season. The Canes dominated BSU on both sides of the ball. Cam Ward continued to excel throwing for 346 yards including five touchdowns, four in the first half alone. The defense, meanwhile, made sure the opposing team never touched the end zone holding Ball State’s offense to 115 yards including six on the ground.

The all-around performance led to a trio of records being broken. Not only is the victory the largest win against an FBS opponent but the 750 total yards on offense is also the most in program history. Lastly, the Hurricanes 159 points through 3 games is the most ever for the school.

Jacolby George had an effective evening securing six catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Samuel Brown checked in with five receptions for 44 yards. Chris Johnson Jr’s first catch of the night was a 37-yard TD strike. He finished the evening with three catches for 53 yards. Xavier Restrepo nabbed three catches of his own for 47 yards, two of which were also touchdowns. Similar to FAMU’s visit last week, the running game was quiet in the first half recording only 22 yards exploding once halftime was over generating 223 yards by night’s end.

Simeon Barrow contributed with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Elijah Alston came up with the team’s only interception.

Miami hits the road next weekend squaring off against the South Florida Bulls.

Takeaways

Cam Ward is on a roll

Miami’s signal caller has now thrown 11 touchdowns in three games. The O-line has done a great job protecting him. To date, Ward has only been sacked thrice with tonight’s defense unable to pressure him. He could’ve had six TDs tying UM’s record for a single game. Jacolby George dropped Ward’s pass forcing Miami to settle for the 30-yard field goal on their first drive.

Jarren Williams set the feat on November 9th, 2019 versus Louisville. After a sluggish first quarter, the Canes opened it up in the second via three TDs feasting on the slow secondary. If I had to search for a blemish it’s the first drive of that same quarter. Ward tried to hit Isaiah Horton but left X wide open eventually punting.

Emory Williams looked good

In his first regular-season appearance since breaking his arm at Florida State last year, Emory completed 11 of 12 passing attempts for 161 yards scoring a TD. His only incompletion was Brown’s dropped pass. If anyone wondered who the backup is, it’s Williams. He didn’t look jittery as in the previous contests consistently hitting his targets and going on a hot streak right out of the gates with five straight completions.

The defense puts up an impressive shutout

I named Kadin Semonza, Braedon Sloan, and Cam Pickett as the guys to keep an eye on and the Hurricanes made sure they were quiet the entire time. At this level, a shutout is always impressive. To keep a team from even attempting a field goal is a feat that speaks volumes especially since I thought they’d pull off two. The unit’s (and team’s) business-like approach has paid off greatly. Although, indeed, The U hasn’t faced a tough opponent, the guys are doing what they should be doing. The Miami Hurricanes are winning games in convincing fashion meeting expectations without playing down to their opponents.
