MIAMI, FL –FIU Women’s Soccer and FGCU battled to a 0-0 stalemate on a rainy day at Leyva Family Field. Despite an energetic showing and several offensive opportunities, neither the Panthers nor the Eagles was able to score, settling for a draw.
FIU Continues to Outshoot Opponents
From the opening whistle, FIU set the tone early, with a Jayden Boelter shot attempt to let the Eagles know they are playing to end the streak. FGCU had a record of 9-0-1 at Leyva Family Field before the game’s end. Zora Jackson continues to be a pest on the field, frustrating opponents by not letting anyone get by her. Zora and Jaileah both played key roles defensively, cutting off multiple attacks.
FIU managed to get its shot on net at the 33-minute mark when Brealyn Viamille had her penalty kick saved by FGCU’s Madara Matrevica. Jayden Boelter continued to create several strong chances, including one just wide of the net in the 25th minute. Two minutes later, Roxy Brewer nearly scored her first goal as a Panther off a corner kick, sending the crowd to its feet as the shot went inches wide. By the 18th minute, FIU had already put seven shots on net, while FGCU had yet to record one.

The Eagles had their best chance of a goal by Kendal Gargiula late in the first half. However, FIU goalkeeper Valery Restrepo made a diving save to keep the Eagles from getting the lead. Restrepo continues to stay alert this season, totaling 15 saves on the year and maintaining a save percentage of 0.714. She also holds FGCU to its first scoreless game of the season.
Closing the half, FGCU started to get a few more looks at the net, but still neither team managed to break the ice. Reaching a stalemate at zero, FIU was the aggressive team with 10 total shots to FGCUs’ one. Credit to the Eagles’ freshman goalie Madara Matrevica, who played a terrific half with four saves, not breaking against the Panthers.
Final Whistle Seals Scoreless Standoff
The second half was very similar to the first, with both teams’ defense being the highlight of the game. Hinako nearly broke through early in the half, but the FGCU held firm and stayed cool under pressure. Shortly after, the Eagles responded with an attempt of their own, forcing Restrepo into another save.
At the halfway mark of the second half, FIU had totaled 15 shots compared to FGCU’s three. Maya Maxwell had the best look of the half with 12th to play, hitting just right of the net. Moments later, Montelene Dymond found space for another shot but pushed it just wide as well.
Despite a few late opportunities, neither team could capitalize. The Panthers ended the game with 20 total shots (six on goal), while FGCU managed just four (two on goal).
Although FIU was unable to secure the win, the match highlighted the team’s defensive unit, which kept FGCU scoreless. The Panthers will move to 2-1-2 on the year, looking to get their first win vs a UCF team that has beaten them in their eight matchups. This is a non-conference matchup taking place on Thursday, Sept 4th in Orlando.
