Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes couldn’t get it done Saturday evening losing to the Florida State Seminoles 10-6 on Superheroes vs. Villains night. A nightmarish fourth inning doomed the Cardiac Canes’ hopes of an upset series win over No. 5 FSU. Starting pitcher Brian Walters’ night was cut short after giving up four straight hits with a walk mixed in. He ultimately allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits through three innings of work. Carson Fischer fared no better allowing a two-run single and another RBI single before getting yanked for Jackson Cleveland who also gave up an RBI hit. By the time Miami recorded the third out the Seminoles put up seven runs leading 9-3.

Although the Hurricanes answered with three runs that same inning, they failed to manufacture more for the rest of the contest. Fabio Peralta was the only UM player to have a multi-hit game going 3-for-3 with a double and two stolen bases. Daniel Cuvet went 1-for-4 with a run, three RBIs, and a stolen base. Max Galvin also managed a hit that was a two-run double in the fourth. Brandon DeGoti lifted his second home run of the season finishing 1-for-4. Michael Fernandez, meanwhile, found the most success pitching in relief lasting three innings surrendering a run on two hits.
Slipping to 14-11 (1-5, ACC) the Miami Hurricanes have not won a weekend series in over a month losing four in a row. They will host Stetson before traveling to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina.
Missed opportunity
Walters nearly escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first but mishandled Brody DeLamielleure’s soft grounder, resulting in a run-inducing fielding error. The threat was ended thanks to good defense from Dorian Gonzalez Jr., keeping the initial damage to a minimum. Miami responded on their first trip to the plate. Cuvet put the ball in play grounding out with runners at the corners, knocking in Jake Ogden.

FSU countered at the top of the second. Hunter Carns led off with a double to left eventually making his way over to third. With a runner lurking in scoring position Gage Harrelson lined one up the middle for the go-ahead RBI single. The Hurricanes kept on fighting scratching two runs. After getting grazed by a pitch, Gonzalez narrowly swiped second base. The brazen move paid off when he advanced to third on a wild pitch setting up the golden opportunity that Cuvet cashed in on via the two-out, bases-loaded two-run single gifting his team the 3-2 lead.
Big inning for the Noles!! 💥
7️⃣ runs on 8 hits – all singles – starting with Gage’s 2-RBI hit, as FSU sends 12 to the plate!

The Seminoles would manage five straight hits with a pair of walks mixed in for the fourth before the Hurricanes could record an out in the form of a double-play. A bases-loaded walk and a 2-run single would knock out Walters. Florida State found itself firmly in the driver’s seat up 9-3. UM showed its resilience on their next at-bat answering with three runs. DeGoti homered complemented by Galvin’s two-run double to make it 9-6. However, Florida State’s Max Williams padded the Seminoles’ lead hammering one deep to left-center for his 10th dinger of the year. They wouldn’t need it.

When I saw how the series started, the Seminoles had convinced me they would make a clean sweep. FSU’s starting rotation put up a combined 0.00 ERA and allowed nine hits while punching out 24 batters walking only four in almost 18 innings of work last weekend versus Boston College. Scoring 16 runs overall is quite an achievement. Friday night’s bounce back was a pleasant surprise because the Hurricanes had no business beating a pitcher likely going in the first round of the MLB Draft, yet they did. There’s fight in this team and the Cardiac Canes may steal a few unlikely wins here and there.

However, there should be a sense of urgency after losing a high-stakes game. Coach J.D. Arteaga missed a signature win and with losses to Florida, UCONN, Wake Forest, and now FSU, Miami has not won a series since Princeton over a month ago. #17 North Carolina is next.
Gus Bus Award
This one is going to Fabio Peralta. He’s been doing well at the plate raising his batting average to .360 solidifying his chances at more playing time.
You’re Killing Me Smalls
Tanner Smith’s hot start to the season has ended and is now hitting .242 for 2025, accentuated by a 0-for-3 night with two strikeouts.
