Miami, Florida – Bobby Marsh made his presence known by going 4-for-4 in his Miami debut as the Hurricanes cruised to a 14-2 win over the Purple Eagles. The Penn State transfer scored twice and drove in four runs while hitting two doubles. Friday night ace Nick Robert spun a solid start giving up one earned run on four hits through five innings of work punching out four. The right-hander got plenty of run support when the Canes exploded for 10 runs at the bottom of the fourth pouncing on five errors, all with two outs.

Dorian Gonzalez, Jr. also had a productive night going 3-for-3 with a walk. Gonzalez recorded a double, an RBI, and two runs. Despite the high output, UM did not record a home run instead relying on three doubles, nine singles, nine walks, two hit-by-pitches, and half a dozen mistakes by the opposition. By the top of the seventh, the Canes substituted most of their starters.

Wing clipped

The Hurricanes opened up the scoring at the bottom of the second. Marsh led off by recording his first hit as a Miami Hurricane with a double down the right-field line. Michael Torres drove in the team’s first run of the season with a single to center field plating Marsh. UM kept rolling in the third when Marsh lined another double to left-center driving home Derek Williams and Gonzalez.

Robert faced his biggest challenge of the night in the fourth. The righty gave up a one-out double to Shawn Cameron who advanced on a pop fly to right field but the Canes turned away Niagara via a groundout to the second baseman.

UM, meanwhile, did not relent blowing the game wide open. Daniel Cuvet recorded his first hit of the night with two outs and runners at the corners slapping an RBI single. Miami extended their advantage as Max Galvin got on base safely during a play that saw two errors committed by the visitors allowing Gonzalez to cross the plate making it 5-0. Marsh would strike again with a single to left upping the score 7-0. Niagara’s fielding woes continued as more miscues surrendered more runs. When the dust settled Miami had a commanding 13-0 lead.

The shutout was, however, lost in the fifth. Curtis McKay correctly timed his swing, taking Robert deep over the left field fence. By then the hole was far too deep for the Purple Eagles to fly out of.

Impressions

It’s a great start to the season. The pitching mostly did well, and the boys had a big inning to put away their opponents. Had those errors not occurred, the score would’ve been much closer. Either way, good teams take advantage of mistakes and Miami did that.

Gus Bus Award

Marsh will have the honor of snagging the first accolade of the 2025 season. I wondered if the bottom half of the order would be productive and for opening night at least, they were thanks to him.

You’re Killing Me Smalls

Galvin went hitless although he drew a walk and stole a base. Regardless, it was a quiet night for him.
