FIU Women’s Soccer started slow against Kennesaw State, but turned it up in the second half to secure a 2-0 win over the Owls, their second straight CUSA victory.

There were certainly opportunities in the first half for the Panthers, but they had trouble finishing the job at times. Meanwhile, their defense kept the Owls at bay, denying many real opportunities. Perhaps it was the sloppy field conditions, as it was raining earlier that day at Kennesaw, just outside of Atlanta.

A Second Half To Forget… For KSU

We can skip over to the second half, as the Panthers stepped up the tempo even further. They already doubled the total shots from the first half (eight to four), but finally found the back of the net.

The first goal came in the 57th minute, thanks in part to Montelene Dymond. The junior forward knocked in her seventh goal of the season, which is also the second match in a row that she has sent one into the nets. As it would turn out, this was also her fourth game-winning goal of the season – the most in Conference USA.

FIU’s second goal came not even 10 minutes later. This one was an insurance goal, with Jayden Boelter belting a header that skidded by everyone. This goal was courtesy of Mona Gellert as she recorded her first assist of the season.

The entire game, the Panthers’ defense limited Kennesaw State to just nine shots. Only two of those were actually on goal. Valery Restrepo didn’t need to do much, but still locked up two saves for yet another clean sheet.

Meanwhile, FIU had 14 shots and five shots on goal on the night.

As mentioned earlier, the Panthers are starting the CUSA slate on a high note. This is the third year in a row the Panthers have gone undefeated in their first two matches of conference play.

We march onwards. FIU will close out this road trip in Alabama with a matchup against Jacksonville State. That’ll be on Sunday, September 28th, at noon.
