Anything can happen on Weekday CUSA!

FIU Football walked into Bowling Green and DOMINATED the 5-1 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers – the first-place team in Conference USA – by a score of 25-6.

WKU was massively favored at home on a nationally televised game, but FIU flipped the script. It was a game in which the Panthers could seemingly do no wrong at times. They exposed parts of the Hilltoppers team on both sides of the ball that no other opponent has done this season.

“I couldn’t be prouder of those guys,” said head coach Willie Simmons postgame. “After two straight losses – eight quarters of football that’s definitely not up to our standard – the guys came and responded in a major way. We talked about growing the program to be able to win games on the road, and Western is one of the toughest places in this conference to play. For those guys to come out and dominate the way they did, it’s really a testament to them.”

It’s not crazy to say that this is a season-altering win for the Panthers. After back-to-back losses, they were ready for this game from the get-go. Now, with a 3-3 record, they have six games to win three more for bowl eligibility. And, dare I say, every game from here on out is winnable.

No Hill Too Steep For A Run

We can happily acknowledge that Keyone Jenkins had a fantastic game. He wrapped up the night with 17 completions for 184 yards and a passing touchdown. He aired the ball out to anyone who wanted it, but found more success with that than usual. That included receivers like Anderson Macguire and Jackson Verdugo, along with an 86-yard game by Alex Perry.

“We came out attacking. Real physical, real fast,” said Jenkins postgame. “Trying to open up the run game for our backs.”

“I’m happy we connected more in the passing game. We got the passing game going for the first time, finally. We know our run game’s good. We can throw the ball a little bit more to build some connections.”

But FIU’s offense keyed in on one of the biggest WKU weaknesses – their rush defense. The Panthers had their way on the ground all night, with 249 yards. Kejon Owens had a career-high 195 rushing yards and a touchdown that put the game away in the third quarter.

They dominated the line of scrimmage, with their offensive line giving Keyone more than enough time in the pocket, while creating massive gaps for their running backs. The only real negative I can give the offense was an excessive amount of holding penalties from the second quarter on that killed some spectacular plays.

Speaking of which, Jenkins was hurt on one of those plays. It occurred near the goal line with less than two minutes to go in the second quarter. Joe Pesansky came in right before halftime, but Lyghtz returned in the second half and deservedly closed out the game.

An Explosive Offense With No Boom

That may have been one of the best defensive performances by FIU in program history. Considering the caliber of the offense they faced – first place in numerous stats in CUSA – limited them to six points AT HOME is insane.

Maverick McIvor was terrorized by FIU’s secondary. The unit had a shaky start early, letting WKU march to the red zone multiple times. But this was a group that bent, but didn’t break. They forced TWO interceptions in the red zone along with a pair of field goals for the Hilltoppers. Nothing more, nothing less.

Western Kentucky’s signal-caller ended up throwing THREE picks, and was benched for their final drive of the game. Jessiah McGrew was responsible for two of them. While Mister Clark not only cashed in on one himself, he also tipped a pass that was ultimately picked off by McGrew.

On special teams, by the way, FIU played its best game of the season. No blocked punts, no returns for a touchdown. Noah Grant was perfect on the night and even kicked a career-long 51-yard field goal on their final drive before halftime.

Ready For Some Neon?

As mentioned earlier, the Panthers now stand with a 3-3 record, with a win and a loss against CUSA opponents. They knocked off Western Kentucky from the top of the standings in the process. Now, if you can believe it, the Kennesaw State Owls are the new kings of Conference USA.

Let’s see if that holds up, as FIU will take them on this upcoming Tuesday, October 21st, at 7pm at Pitbull Stadium on Vice Night. It’ll be another nationally televised game on ESPN2.
