FIU Demolished By UConn On Offense, Defense, & Special Teams

FIU Demolished By UConn

FIU Football went into this game looking for a bounce-back win following a disastrous performance against Delaware. Instead, it was more of the same as the Panthers were demolished by UConn by a score of 51-10 in one of the most lopsided losses in recent years for FIU.

Even in blowout losses, there are some positives here and there to take away, but not this game. Every aspect of FIU was not ready for this game. Their offense was overwhelmed by UConn’s defense and questionable playcalling. The defense had no legitimate answers for the Huskies’ air raid offense alongside a reliable running game. And, well, their special teams gave up another blocked punt.

There were bad signs from the get-go, as Dwight Nunoo suffered a major injury to the head/neck area on the opening kickoff. He was down on the ground for many minutes until stretchered off the field to a local hospital. A devastating way to start a football game, you have to wonder how big an impact that was for FIU mentally for the remainder of the game.

Since taking down Florida Atlantic in the Shula Bowl, FIU has been outscored 89-26 in two games, one at Pitbull Stadium. Now, their Conference USA stretch of the season begins, and the Panthers will need to address some major concerns as soon as possible to keep up with the competition.

Not Boding Well For What’s To Come

Keyone Jenkins had another subpar performance, with only 74 passing yards and an interception. The Preseason CUSA Offensive Player Of The Year has had back-to-back subpar performances, as this FIU offense is clinging to its running game to lead them.

Joe Pesansky came into the game in the third quarter and had some decent throws here and there, but also threw two interceptions in the process. Moving on.

Even that can only do so much. Kejon Owens has another solid game with 67 yards and their lone touchdown. Still, it’s going to take more than one running back to turn this offense into the explosive threat many people thought it could be. No wide receiver had a decent enough performance to even be mentioned here.

One of the things FIU had to do to keep up with UConn was win the turnover battle. Instead, THEY turned the ball over FIVE times. 13 of the Huskies’ 51 points came off of those.

Defensively, no Brian Blades means no exceptional playmaking. They gave up 527 total yards, with Joe Fagnano throwing for 355 and FOUR touchdowns. Every time UConn strolled into the end zone (Six times), they cashed in on a touchdown. Again, there were no exceptional playmakers for FIU on defense in this game.

Not The Best Start To The Season

Well, that’s it. FIU is 2-3 so far this season as they finish with a 2-2 record against nonconference opponents. If you thought it was going to get any easier, you’d be mistaken. They’re heading to Bowling Green to take on one of the top teams in CUSA – the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The last time they played there, uh, they lost 73-0.

Welcome to Weekday CUSA, by the way. Every game in the month of October for FIU will be played on either Tuesday or Wednesday. This game’s on Tuesday, October 14th, at 8pm and can be seen on ESPNU.
