MIAMI, FL – Coming into the game, the Buffalo Bills won 16 of their last 18 games against the Miami Dolphins. The Bills had a seven-game winning streak against the Dolphins. Tua Tagovailoa had just one career victory against Buffalo. Multiple players on the Fins had never beaten the Bills. All of the positive energy would come to fruition for the Dolphins as they shocked the NFL world in a 30-13 upset win against the Bills.
Defense Shuts Down Buffalo’s Offense
In the first half, the Bills looked lifeless with just 87 yards. Their only real chance of scoring came in the 2nd quarter when they were down by two scores.
The Bills had a solid drive going. It was 1st and 10 at the Miami 34 when Dalvin Cook was handed the ball and ran for nine yards. Then, Jack Jones punched the ball out of Cook’s hand for a fumble recovery.
Buffalo came close to scoring again in the 3rd quarter in a 16-0 game. They alternated between passing and running, taking their time. On the 14th play of the drive, Josh Allen had his eyes set for the endzone. Dawson Knox was the intended receiver, but Ifeatu Melifonwu came in and snatched the ball for an interception. Despite their inability to score, it was their best-looking drive of the game.

For the Bills, the 2nd half was much better for them, but it was clear those two turnovers were costly. They were kept scoreless until there were 12 minutes left on the clock.
Down 16-6 in the 4th quarter, the Bills were still in the game. They gained 29 yards in just over a minute, and then the unthinkable happened to them yet again. On a 3rd and short, Allen attempted the QB sneak and got more than just a few yards. He was able to get 15 yards until Jordyn Brooks punched the ball out of his possession.

Every time the Bills seemed to gain momentum, the Dolphins’ defense shut the door when it counted.
Brooks finished with 12 tackles (2 for loss) while Tyrel Dodson had nine. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Jones, and Dante Trader Jr. (2 for loss) each finished six tackles. Bradley Chubb had four quarterback hits.
Dolphins Convert Turnovers into Big Plays
On the box score, the Dolphins actually lost in nearly every offensive category except for the turnover battle. The Bills had more yardage, 1st downs, plays, and even time of possession. However, the Dolphins did a great job of flipping those turnovers into big touchdown plays.
Things didn’t start off well for the Fins on offense. Alec Ingold was called for a false start, and Miami had to burn a timeout without the clock having even ticked yet. The short, minuscule drive ended in Tagovailoa throwing an interception.
On the next drive, he made up for it. Tagovailoa put together a 12-play, 92-yard drive, which was capped off by a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Waddle. De’Von Achane did most of the work during the drive, accumulating 53 yards.

The very next drive, we saw something we normally don’t see. Tua Tagovailoa threw a bomb in the air to Waddle for a 38-yard touchdown down the right sideline.

On the next drive, Riley Patterson kicked a field goal. By then, it was impressive that the Dolphins held a 16-point lead, which left the Bills in rare territory.
The 3rd quarter was a quiet one for the Dolphins, but they came right back to put the icing on the cake.
After Allen’s fumble, Achane went back to work. He ran up the middle for 59 yards all the way to the endzone, making it 23-13. Buffalo’s defense missed several tackles and looked worn out.

De’Von Achane wasn’t done yet. After Miami won the onside kick, he broke free again on another play for 35 yards to seal the victory for the Fins.
The offensive line also played an exceptional game for Miami. Just as they did in the victory over the Falcons, the Dolphins utilized a six-offensive lineman package. Daniel Brunskill was used as a tight end. Will they use it permanently moving forward? The Dolphins are now 2-0 with that formation.
Tagovailoa went 15-of-21, throwing for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Achane posted 22 carries for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 51 yards. Waddle had five receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.
