INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The most unprepared team on the field for any game on this opening NFL weekend was the Miami Dolphins. As soon as they kicked off the ball, the game was essentially over for them. Miami was undisciplined, uninspired, and unprepared for their game. They treated this game as if it were a preseason game, and the result reflected that. Concerns loom for a Dolphins team that just got embarrassed by the Indianapolis Colts in a 33-8 blowout loss.
Colts Beat the Dolphins to the Ground
The Colts used the clock to their advantage, which is what won them the game. They looked comfortable the entire game, as most of their drives were tedious for the Dolphins. Daniel Jones led the Colts’ offense and showed why he’s their starting quarterback. On his first drive, he threw some great passes to rookie TE Tyler Warren and wideout Michael Pittman Jr. The Dolphins’ defense seemed confused at times there. Ultimately, they settled for a field goal, but that was just the beginning.
Their next drive involved 14 plays for 84 yards, lasting 8:18. It was surprising that Jonathan Taylor had only touched the ball once at this point. He got his fair share of runs, including a 13-yard run. Once he started making plays, it was clear the Colts were going to attack both in the air and on the ground. Jones connected with Pittman Jr. on a deep 27-yard pass, making it 10-0.

After recovering the ball via a Dolphins turnover, Daniel Jones was back to business on what was their quickest drive of the game. He made two well-thrown passes and eventually used his legs to scramble for the TD, making it 17-0. Indianapolis walked into the locker room at halftime on cruise control with a 20-point lead.
Up 23-0 in the 4th quarter, the Colts put on another long drive, which was clearly wearing down the Dolphins’ defense. Rookie RB DJ Giddens was put in the game, and he shone, having three runs of 10+ yards. Jones then scored on his second quarterback sneak of the game, extending the lead to 30.

Brutal Game All Around
It’s hard to highlight anything that went the Dolphins’ way. Things were looking somewhat promising on their first drive, only for Tua Tagovailoa to overthrow Tyreek Hill and then be intercepted by safety Cam Bynum. They were so outplayed in time of possession by Indianapolis that they didn’t begin their second drive until the second quarter. After a run by Devon Achane, Miami opted for the no-huddle offense, and Tagovailoa was immediately sacked. Tua fumbled the ball on his way down, which was recovered by Xavien Howard.
By halftime, while the Colts had already run 43 plays, the Dolphins only managed to settle for 43 total yards. Tua Tagovailoa was picked off again in the third quarter by Laiatu Latu. The Dolphins emerged on offense too late. In the 4th quarter, down 30-0, they finally put together a great drive. Tagovailoa started looking more confident in throwing the ball down the field. The adjustment should’ve come earlier. Whether it was focus or scheme, it worked, and Tua found Achane for a touchdown. Tagovailoa was also successful on the 2-point conversion.

Still, it was an ugly day for this offense, especially the sixth-year quarterback. He completed 14-of-23 passes for 114 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Achane only had seven carries for 55 yards. Tyreek Hill disappointed with just four receptions for 40 yards. As a whole, the Dolphins put up just 211 yards of offense and one trip in the red zone. They only managed to possess the ball for 21 minutes and 17 seconds.

Takeaways
This game was flat-out unacceptable. What was seen on the field today won’t be a one-time thing. The offense and defense were equally unprepared, and the team nearly was shut out. Daniel Jones hardly had to face any pressure today. He had a quarterback rating of 115.9. The defensive front was absent, allowing Indianapolis to go 3-for-3 on fourth down. Bradley Chubb had the only sack for Miami. The secondary also looked worse than expected.
The Colts totaled 418 yards of offense and were effective on third down, converting on seven of 15 chances. They had possession of the ball for 38:43. Jones completed 22-of-29 passes for 272 yards and a touchdown. Indianapolis had 156 rushing yards, with Jones being a contributor in that category as well. Pittman Jr. had six catches for 80 yards, and Tyler Warren impressed in his NFL debut with seven receptions for 76 yards.
The Dolphins made the Colts look like an AFC Championship-caliber team today. Daniel Jones looked like vintage Peyton Manning. In reality, the Colts will more than likely miss the playoffs, and Jones won’t earn a Pro Bowl selection. However, Miami looks way worse. Miami needs to recover and adjust from this game. Otherwise, the season will deteriorate before they can build any momentum.
