MIAMI, FL – Following a freshman year that saw Ashton Williamson start in nearly half of his games, he made the decision to enter the transfer portal. Williamson made the visit to the University of Iowa at the beginning of May.
By 21, he put pen to paper and announced his commitment to be a Hawkeye. Just one week after announcing his commitment, Ashton Williamson has decommitted from the program altogether and is set to rejoin the FIU Panthers.
Connections to Iowa
The Iowa Hawkeyes assistant coach, Luke Barnwell, played a role in Williamson’s initial commitment to Iowa. Before stepping foot on Modesto Maidique Campus, Williamson played a season of post-graduate basketball at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas. Although he didn’t directly play for Barnwell there at the time, the coaches at this institution still had connections to him. Thus, that is how he was able to get their initial interest.
2024-25 season review
In his 33 contests, Ashton Williamson averaged 7.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. He led FIU in rebounds and assists. Williamson did struggle with his shots, though, shooting 39.4% from the court, 32.9% from three-point range, and 67.6% from the free-throw line. Despite that, he was still a reliable player for the Panthers by averaging a solid 24.2 minutes per game.

2025-26 expectations
Ashton Williamson being able to rejoin is great news for the Panthers. The 6’2 point guard did play a key role for them and should no doubt be a mainstay on the starting lineup moving forward. With Ashton Williamson leading the backcourt, he will earn more minutes and should be able to improve on his scoring numbers. This should be no issue for him as he’ll get to face most of the same Conference USA teams next season.
