MIAMI, FL – The Yankees had plenty of runs and hits, but the Marlins had more. This game seemed like a lost cause at one point for the Marlins. They were held without a hit until the 5th inning when they were down 6-0. The bats would go on to awaken for Miami as both teams started trading runs. Eventually, the heavy offensive game got tied up at 10 apiece. New York would then retake the lead in the 9th inning. Ultimately, the hitting cinema ended in favor of the Marlins against the Yankees in a 13-12 victory.
Yankees Fire Powered Offense
The Yankees were quiet on offense until the 4th inning. They made Janson Junk work. Giancarlo Stanton provided the first bit of entertainment in this one. He hit a line drive of a home run into the Marlins’ bullpen, scoring both Trent Grisham and Jasson Dominguez. Stanton’s three-run jack had the highest exit velocity in the game at 116 MPH.

Next inning, Junk appeared to have things under control. There were two outs and one runner at first. Defensively, the Marlins continued to struggle in allowing runners to steal bases. Anthony Volpe had one of the Yankees’ five stolen bases. Then, Junk lost Grisham on a 3-2 count. Dominguez drove in the next run off a breaking ball.
Grisham and Dominguez would score once again off a Cody Bellinger single. By now, it was a 6-0 blowout. Hope for the Marlins was fading away fast in this one.
Janson Junk pitched five innings, allowing six hits, six earned runs, 1 walk, and struck out four hitters. It was far from a great start, but when looking back at the box score, his no-decision wasn’t terrible either.
Down But Not Out
As the 5th inning rolled by, this game was surehandedly looking like an easy victory for New York. Miami had all zeros on the scoreboard.
Eric Wagaman was the first batter up, and he fought hard for a 3-2 count. Everything thrown at him was fastballs around the plate. He eventually knocked one through, giving the Marlins their first hit of the game. Javier Sanoja came up and also connected on a fastball. The utility infielder hit an opposite-field home run, giving the Fish their first two runs on the board.

Despite Carlos Rodon striking out nine, the Marlins made him work all night long. Rodon gave up five walks. He gave up two in that inning, to Xavier Edwards and Heriberto Hernadez. After Otto Lopez got hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded. Liam Hicks came up and saw plenty of pitches outside of the plate. He then came through, plating in two more runs, making it a 6-4 game.

Yankees Extend Lead
With Vicente Bellozo pitching, the Yankees were able to capitalize and extend their lead in the 7th inning. Trent Grisham went yard, hitting a three-run blast that hit the top of the foul pole in right field. Up 9-4, the Yanks had a 97.2%-win probability.
Grand Salami Plus More
Entering the 7th, the game once again appeared to be a lopsided one in the Yankees’ favor. However, the Marlins were doing all the right things, which was getting on base. Agustin Ramirez and Otto Lopez each hit singles, and then Liam Hicks took a walk, leaving the bases loaded for no one other than Kyle Stowers. Already with one grand slam back in May, Stowers was due for another. It still came as a shock, though, when he crushed the ball into the Marlins’ bullpen. The ballpark was rumbling when Stowers was rounding the basepaths. For the newly acquired Jake Bird, it was an outing to forget in his Yankees debut.
Can you believe this guy? Kyle Stowers hits a grand slam, putting the #Marlins within one run.

The party didn’t stop there. Relief pitcher David Bednar came into the game, making his debut as well in a pinstripe uniform. As if one home run weren’t enough, Javier Sanoja went yard for the second time. He made the most of it in his at-bat, marking his first career multi-homer game. Just like that, the Fightin’ Fish rallied to come back once again, all tied up at 9.

Agustin Ramirez then gave the Marlins their first lead of the game, making it 10-9 thanks to his base hit. He drove in Jakob Marsee, the #10 prospect, who hit a double for his first MLB hit. It was a frustrating relief appearance for Bednar.

Yankees Retake Lead Once Again
For the first time in the entire game, the New York Yankees found themselves down in the game. That changed very quickly in the 8th inning once Volpe hit a solo blast into left field. The ball traveled with an exit velocity of 110.1 MPH and carried away 421 feet in the air. Yankees fans were louder than ever yet again.
In the 9th inning, they went on to score insurance runs. Ryan McMahon hit an RBI single, giving them the 11-10 lead. Then, Volpe came through with another big hit. He drove in McMahon with a double. Anthony Volpe was the top performer of the game. He went 4-for-5 with three runs and a pair of stolen bases.
9th Inning Magic
Down 12-10 in the 9th inning, everyone had the feeling that despite being down a pair of runs, this team had a legit chance of walking it off. The Marlins didn’t disappoint. The Yankees brought out Camilo Doval to save the game. He was the third relief pitcher they acquired at the trade deadline, and his outing didn’t go as planned either.
Following Sanoja’s third hit and Marsee’s third walk came Edwards. X stepped up and seized the opportunity. His single turned into two RBI as a result of the ball going right under the glove of Jose Caballero. What should’ve been simple fielding turned into a hot mess for the Yankees.

After previously hitting the ball off the tip of his bat in the at-bat, Agustin Ramirez did the same thing. This time, the ball stayed in fair territory. Catcher Austin Wells went on to field it. The problem, however, was that no one was there to back him up at home plate. Edwards would go on to score the winning run.

Impressions
Jakob Marsee had an MLB debut to remember. Having been called up the day before, the 24-year-old finished the night going 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and a .500 batting average. He was the first player in franchise history to have three walks in his team debut.
In mid-June, the Fish had a 25-41 record and were down 12.5 games behind the last Wild Card spot. Now, at the start of August, they have a 53-55 record and are down by 6.5 games in the Wild Card race. At this pace, they could be playing some October baseball.
Today’s six-run comeback victory was the largest one since August 13, 2023, against the Yankees, when they erased a six-run deficit as well in an 8-7 win.
The Marlins are now tied for second in the MLB with eight walk-off wins this season.
