Looking to build on its momentum from a 2024 Conference USA title, FIU women’s soccer has welcomed a group of new players, alongside head coach Mat Dunn, who will play key roles in the team’s continued success.

The Panthers have welcomed in sophomore defender Jaileah McPherson, a player whose defensive abilities, leadership qualities, and international experience set her apart in the conference. As McPherson prepares to join the Panthers, her impressive record showcases a journey marked with plenty of experience.

A Defense-Oriented Playmaker From Canada

Originally from Burlington, Ontario, McPherson developed her skills at Bill Crothers Secondary School while also training at the National Development Centre (NDC). She played an instrumental role in pushing the team to a second-place finish in the 2023 League1 Ontario season.

As a defensive anchor, McPherson was responsible for organizing the back line, guiding the team to shut down opposing attacks. She helped NDC Ontario finish the season with one of the league’s best defensive records in 2024. Capitalizing on the team’s defensive success, NDC went on to win the 2024 League 1 Ontario Women’s Premier Championship.

Beyond her Ontario accomplishments, McPherson has set herself apart on the international stage as well. She was named captain of the Jamaica U-20 women’s national team. She earned respect for her composure, defensive intelligence, and ability to lead under pressure from her coaches. Representing Jamaica in international competitions, McPherson has consistently demonstrated her capacity to compete against top-tier talent.

McPherson started her collegiate career at the University of Memphis. She made an appearance in her first game vs Alabama A&M. She logged 21 minutes to propel the Tigers to a 5-1 victory. Her contributions to a strong defensive unit caught the attention of FIU’s coaching staff. Now, she will be part of the Panthers’ defensive strategy.

She brings with her not only athletic ability but also experience gained from competing at the national and international levels. With two years of eligibility remaining, she is in a position to strengthen FIU’s defense, provide leadership, and help the Panthers repeat as conference champions.
