Miami, Florida –Β The Miami Hurricanes visit Florida International for their third meeting of 2025, each side looking to claim the edge in the season series. Contrary to the previous clash, the opposing programs’ fortunes have done a 180 in recent times. UM rolls into campus riding high, fresh off a sweep of No. 14 Georgia Tech that has since tumbled down 10 spots in the latest D1 Top 25 Rankings. The Canes have accumulated a six-game winning streak. Miami sits at 24-17, including a 9-9 conference record.

FIU, meanwhile, has slipped to 22-18, losing five in a row after getting swept at Kennesaw State, going 6-8 in C-USA play. The Panthers hope a little home cooking can return them to the win column, especially since they’re 18-7 at home while Miami is 5-10 on the road. Regarding midweek battles, UM is 5-4 and FIU is 3-5. Four weeks remain in the regular season as both sides look to improve their postseason prospects. Every game is predictably becoming increasingly important.

What happened since

The Cardiac Canes began their climb after a difficult portion of the schedule that saw the team go 7-13, losing five consecutive weekend series. UM traveled to Pittsburgh, taking two of three with a run-rule victory in the finale. Afterward, the Hurricanes trounced Bethune-Cookman 11-1 in another run-rule result. Miami went on to win two more versus Duke. This was followed by a 5-4 midweek victory over FAU that flowed into busting out the brooms versus the Yellow Jackets.

Florida International lost both road games to Louisiana Tech, and the finale was canceled. The blue and gold briefly bounced back with a home series win over New Mexico State. However, they fell to Florida Gulf Coast during a visit to Fort Myers. This started a week filled with losses, capped off with the debacle against the Owls. The last meeting with FGCU also ended in defeat, giving the season sweep to the Eagles.

Players to watch

Max Galvin went 6-for-12 (.500) over the weekend, hitting three doubles, scoring twice, and knocking in a run. Slashing .280/.352/.420 Galvin will look to keep his bat hot versus a susceptible pitching staff, although he has thus far been hitless in four at-bats. Michael Torres recorded three hits in 10 at-bats (.300), including his first collegiate home run that made it 8-0 on Sunday. His high-quality fielding skills have been on display, maintaining a consistently elite level at center field. Torres will certainly flash his glove if he starts Wednesday night. Daniel Cuvet is thriving at the hot corner, recording a .325/.392/.570 line complemented by a .962 OPS, leading the team in RBIs (50) and home runs (9), one of those being the grand slam at loanDepot Park.

Alex Ulloa struggled mightily at Kennesaw State, producing one hit in 13 at-bats. Furthermore, his batting average has dipped to .274, a big drop from .314, which is where his hitting was the last time he faced the Hurricanes. Ulloa is overdue for a bounce-back. Austin Dearing was one of the few successful at the plate this weekend. Going 4-for-9 with an RBI and a pair of walks, Dearing went off on the Hurricanes during round two of the crowntown clash, finishing 3-for-4 including two runs, three RBIs and deuces for doubles. Lastly, Brylan West went 3-for-10 versus the Owls. Despite a quiet first meeting in the Battle for the 305, he finished 3-for-5 in the 10-2 victory. FIU will need an encore performance from him at the plate.

Prediction

Initially, this was the game I saw the Hurricanes stumbling, their lone loss to the Panthers. Seeing that already happened, coupled with the momentum they’re carrying, the Cardiac Canes should get it done on the other side of town. On the one hand, they swept Georgia Tech; on the other, it’s a midweek matchup where anything can happen. Final score: 6-4 Miami.
