FIU Men’s Soccer looked to achieve one of the biggest upsets of the season against the 17th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, but couldn’t hold on as UNC won by a score of 3-1.

Michael Appiah sank the lone goal of the match for FIU in the 23rd minute, giving them an early lead. It was also the first goal of the season for not just Appiah, but the entire Panthers team.

But everything went from for the Panthers from the 75th minute onward, as UNC landed two goals within eight seconds of each other, and then one more three minutes later to not only take the lead but add an insurance goal in the process.

Nigel Van Haveren had a busy night in net for FIU with nine saves while fending off 18 shots from the Tar Heels.

To make matters for for FIU, it was reported during the broadcast that Eduardo Mustre will miss four to six weeks of matches due to an injury.

The Panthers stand with a 0-3 record and will have to take on another ranked opponent on Monday, September 2nd at 1pm as they’ll face the Georgetown Hoyas in the nation’s capital.
