MIAMI, FL – After defeating Oregon State in their season opener, Kyle Russell’s team returned home to put on a masterclass performance, blowing out the Virginia Commonwealth Rams by a final score of 4-0.

The Panthers put their foot on the gas early. In the 4th minute, Eduardo Mustre passed the ball to Paulo Avles, who did the rest and sank FIUs first goal of the day.

Just ten minutes later, Bernardo Dos Santos Monteiro scored the second goal of the game which was assisted by Fumiya Shiraishi off a pass from near the middle of the field.

The final goal of the first half was nailed in by Kasper Skraep – a header shot which was assisted by Tim Schels off a penalty kick at midfield. The Panthers were able to score three goals before the first half of action was even over.

What stood out about the first half was the fact that the Panthers had 15 shots against VCU’s four. It just goes to show how aggressive FIU can be on the offensive side of things.

The final goal of the night came in the 48th minute thanks to Yushi Nagao who gave the Panthers a 4-0 lead, which they didn’t look back at.

What also stood out about the Panthers’ performance was the fact that they put themselves in a good position to succeed. Throughout the whole night, FIU had a total of eight corner kicks and 22 shots.

FIU entered that match with the #14 national rank in all of college soccer, and they came out ranked as the seventh-best team in the country.

The Panthers will stay at home for their next matchup and will go up against the Central Arkansas Bears on Friday, September 1st at 7:00pm.
