Dolphins Acquire Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey in Blockbuster Trade

Miami, FL – The Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a trade that’ll send cornerback Jalen Ramsey to South Florida, the first confirmed major trade of the offseason. However, it won’t become official until Wednesday, March 15th.

With the NFL’s free agency period officially beginning on Wednesday, the Miami Dolphins have already made a splash in the market in a move that’s all too reminiscent of last year when they acquired wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

In exchange for the six-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl LVI champion, the Dolphins are sending a 2023 third-round pick as well as tight end Hunter Long to the Rams. Overall, a small package for one of the most highly regarded defensive players in the NFL.

The trade for Ramsey has also shined some light on some of Miami’s previous moves prior to the trade, when they restructured the contracts of multiple players on their roster, including Hill, offensive lineman Terron Armstead, and linebacker Bradley Chubb – saving them about $30 million in cap space. Prior to this, the Dolphins were $16 million over the cap space.

Originally from Tennessee, Ramsey made waves in football when he attended Florida State, putting up numbers that mimicked Deion Sanders for the Seminoles. He was then drafted in 2016 by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and cemented himself as one of the key players in their “Sacksonville” defense, reaching the AFC Championship game in 2017.

After four seasons in Jacksonville, Ramsey was traded to the Los Angeles Rams, where his numbers continued to blossom. Along with the emergence of defensive end Aaron Donald, the Rams and their defense earned a spot in Super Bowl LVI, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals for the second championship in franchise history.

Overall, Ramsey has recorded 452 tackles, 92 deflections, and 19 interceptions in his NFL career. Along with six Pro Bowl appearances, Ramsey is also a three time First-Team All Pro.

Ramsey joins an already stacked Miami defense that featured two 2022 Pro Bowlers in Chubb and cornerback Xavien Howard. With other highly regarded players such as safety Jevon Holland, linebacker Jaelan Phillips, and defensive end Christian Wilkins, Ramsey will likely fit in just right with the defense along with their brand new coordinator, Vic Fangio.
