Panthers Go Hitless with Runners on Base in Loss to LA Tech

Panthers Hitless Runners Base

FIU Athletics

MIAMI, FL – It was Country Night at the FIU Baseball Stadium, with 859 people in the bleachers. Louisiana Tech’s pitchers were dominant all game long, sending FIU’s hitters back to the dugout on punchouts over a dozen times.

In contrast, they showed patience at the plate at times as well, getting walked in the double-digit range. However, the bats were silent all night as the Panthers went hitless with runners on base in their 6-2 loss to the LA Tech Bulldogs.

Bulldogs Take Control From the Start

Enrique Sierra got the ball, making his first start of the season. Despite some challenging moments, he did have some success in his outing. In the first, the Bulldogs opened with a 1-0 lead on a Trey Hawsey single.

Louisiana Tech followed up with a three-run second. Colby Lunsford hit a sac fly, and Trey Hawsey hit a two-run double. Then, in the fifth, LA Tech was able to get its fifth run after Cade Patterson knocked in a run.

Sierra lasted 4.2 innings, surrendering five hits, five earned runs, and two walks on six strikeouts, a season high. He faced 23 hitters and threw a total of 91 pitches, posting a 63% strike rate, with 57 strikes.

The fifth inning was the first time FIU showed any signs of life at the dish. Cooper Rasmussen kicked off the inning with a hit. Then, Mario Trivella and Samuel Fischer both drew walks to load up the bases. Aidan Cohall drew the team’s third consecutive walk, scoring Rasmussen. Two at-bats later, Rasmussen scored on a wild pitch.

George Adams made his eighth appearance out of the bullpen and was able to truly settle down the offense for the Bulldogs. They were only able to score on a groundout double play with no outs in the seventh.

Adams went 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, two walks, and a run on two strikeouts while facing 16 hitters. He did have to work his way through some counts, throwing 70 pitches. Adams had a 57% strike rate with 40 strikes.

Jordan Vargas made an appearance in the ninth, retiring the side with a strikeout.

Hitting Woes

For the Panthers, nothing went their way for their hitters. They had as many hits as they had errors, with a deuce. Andrew Ildefonso had a leadoff hit, and Rasmussen singled at the start of the fifth.

FIU drew a total of 10 walks in the contest but also struck out 14 times. Fischer led the team with four walks, and Cohall drew a pair of bases on balls. Rasmussen struck out three times tonight.

12 runners were left on base for the Panthers as they went 0-for-18 at the plate with runners on base.
