Owen Caissie walks off Colorado Rockies for Sunday Sweep

Miami, Florida – The Miami Marlins remain undefeated thanks to Owen Caissie dramatically walking off the Colorado Rockies during a ninth inning that went from disappointment to euphoria. The Fighting Fish are now 3-0 to start the season for the third time in franchise history. It also marks the third time in team history the Marlins have swept their first series of a season. The last was in 2009. As fate would have it, Caissie’s first home run as a Marlin is his first career walk-off home run.

Miami was down to its last out after Liam Hicks lined straight into first baseman Troy Johnston’s glove. Javier Sanoja doubled to keep the Fish alive, setting up Big Red’s hero moment. Caissie was not in the starting lineup, pinch-hitting for Austin Slater in the eighth. He remained in the game at right field.

Max Meyer ran into issues early, giving up three runs in the first frame as part of a five-inning start that included two walks and five strikeouts. Both free passes came during the rough patch, allowing Jordan Beck to punish Meyer via a bases-clearing double down the third-base line. Otto Lopez responded on his first at-bat, lifting a two-out RBI double to score Jakob Marsee. Miami threatened again in the second.  Deyvison De Los Santos doubled on his first career at-bat, making his MLB debut, pushing Xavier Edwards to third. Brenton Doyle almost gloved it, but the ball popped out. With two runners in scoring position, Slater knocked in another run with a sac fly to right field.

Colorado tried to score in the seventh; however, Tyler Phillips struck out Ezequiel Tovar, stranding his teammates at second and third. John King and Michael Petersen followed handcuffing the Rockies. Charged by a three-game winning streak, the Marlins host the White Sox tomorrow night.

Impressions

First, I want to welcome Deyvison De Los Santos to the big show. His debut was somewhat lost in all the excitement. Second, I want to tip my cap to Owen Caissie, who’s making a strong case for being an everyday starter. Coach Clayton McCullough announced at the post-game presser that he will be in tomorrow’s lineup. Meyer had some command issues, then settled down after the turbulence, staying solid the rest of the day with the bullpen picking up where he left off. When it comes to the series, the pitching was great. You had both Sandy Alcantara and Eury Perez go seven innings apiece. Throw in today’s game, and it’s a combined 18 strikeouts through 19 innings of work. The relievers worked eight frames, punching out 12, scattering five hits. At the plate, the offense is playing to its identity as a scrappy team fighting until the last out. Onwards to Chicago!
