Ft. Lauderdale – CF Montreal was back in action after a heartbreaking loss to Atlanta United. However, this week’s matchup was against FC Cincinnati, a team that Montreal has never beaten. Currently, Cincinnati sits at the bottom of the eastern conference table, coming into this match with no wins on the season. This might be the best opportunity for the Sacré Bleus to snag their first win against Cincy. Unfortunately, today was not the day for Montreal to beat Cincinnati. The loss allowed Cincy to get their first three points of the season.
Game Breakdown
In the first half, Montreal took immediate control of the match. As a matter of fact, they had nine shots to Cincinnati’s six and had 54% possession of the ball. Montreal picked up the intensity in the last five minutes of the half, rifling off shot after shot. One of the best attempts was a beautiful bicycle kick by midfielder Ahmed Hamdi. Unfortunately, the shot did not hit the back of the net. The first half ended with a score of 0-0.

In the second half, the goals started coming. First, a goal was scored in the 56th minute by midfielder Djordje Mihailovic, tying him with forward, Bjorn Johnson for the most goals scored by a Montreal player this season. Cincy did not keep that 1-0 deficit for long, as substitute forward, Jurgen Locadia scored, tying up the game in the 70th minute. In a shocking turn of events, Cincinnati defender Gustavo Vallecilla scored a game-winning header off of a set piece in the 86th minute. Yet, despite controlling most of the game, Montreal lacked aggressiveness in the second half. They could not handle the counterattacks from Cincinnati. Consequently, Montreal still has yet to beat Cincy. The final score of the game was 2-1.
